Rent a Car

I'm planning a trip to Santo Domingo within the next month, and I would like to rent a car upon arrival. Do I need to have an international license to do so? Or will my NJ license suffice?

Also, can anyone suggest what type of car would be the best choice in terms of gas consumption and easy travel on the roads?

Your US drivers license is all you need--We rented an economy car last month from Thrifty at SDQ airport for 9 days for $275-
If you use a "Capital One" credit card, you don't pay the add'l 3%foreign transaction fee other credit cards charge-

On this last trip- a week ago- we rented an economy size car from Thrifty, at the SDQ location (Mitsubishi Galant 4 door sedan). It was fantastic on gas and great maneuvering through the tight streets of Colonial City. On previous trips we've rented SUVs from Thrifty and Avis. Great if you're heading up in the mountains or small towns as some of the roads are really bad.

Advisories:

1. Make sure every nick and scratch is noted on the rental agreement before you drive away.

2. Do not expect the same level of car "newness" you would expect to find in NA/Europe.

3. If you're staying in the capital and your hotel has a garage, use it.

4. Take pictures if you can and never tell them where you are staying.

Be mindful when booking online that often times the tax is not included in the rate. DR tax is 16% and if you rent from the airport, attach an additional 10% Airport Tax.

Also, I prefer to rent Diesel Vehicles, as gasoline here is quite expensive.

I just rented a car from the Americas (for Feb 09) and they charge a circulation tax of 1.5% on top of the 10% airport and 16% Dominican tax. As far as the license goes, you can drive with your Jersey license.

I strongly suggest using a card with Car Rental Protection (AMEX, etc.) so that you don't have to pay the rental company for theft or collision which can be up to $20 per day...
