How Difficult To See The Animals

A comment attached to the DR! Guide to the zoo includes:

"if you are a first time visitor, you may not actually see the animals because the Zoo is big, and the animals, are well hidden."

Would those who have been to the zoo and seen the animals please explain the secret of seeing the animals even on your first visit?

I guess it would be a good idea to find out the feeding times, if they are all about the same time or not. Most animals will go to sleep after a big meal and go into seclusion.

This 2005 article states that at that time there were no maps and routes were marked.

Are both available now, or is it necessary directions such as are provided in this article?

Nacional Zoo - Gringo Without a Cage Reviews and Photos, Santo Domingo - IgoUgo

The zoo is marked well. Normally, visitors take a small motorized train through the first section of road leading into the main part of the zoo. This can be done on foot as well, but it's a bit of a walk. I know the cages you pass on the train contain various birds, one cage with owls. There is also a very rare Hispaniola Solenadon.

On the train, you shoot right by, so, if you want to see these animals it's better to walk.

You'll see the entire zoo easily on foot. Although it's the largest in the Caribbean, it does not compare to enormities like the Bronx Zoo.

Thanks. That is good information.

What about my question in earlier post about it being hard to see animals on first visit because you don't know where to look. Is this really a concern?

Don't worry too much about this. Sometimes the tigers and lions like to hide in the far corners of their area: maybe to not be bothered and maybe to cool off in the shade.

You should have no problem seeing all the animals at the zoo. Even if you miss a couple, the visit is well worth it.

Santo Domingo - Parque Zoological

I liked the zoo. You get to see all manner of stuff that you don't see at other zoos like the guys in hip waders cleaning the crocodile pit with 30 or so croc's jockeying for position on them.

At the end of the little ride you can turn up the hill to the "Childrens' zoo" where the best stuff is (midget ponies, goats, snakes and parrots). The keeper took one of the parrots (a cockatiel) out of the cage to let me get pictures with it on my shoulder. If the Children's zoo doesn't bring the kid out in you then you're half dead already.

Eat Lunch At Zoo?

I'm planning to go to the zoo during coming week. Is there a place where you can buy something for lunch?

The zoo really isn't that big. There's a little shop but sometimes it's closed. I'd think that your best bet would be to plan a half day at the zoo and a half day at the botanical gardens which is literally on the same plot of land. Go for lunch in between and sit down at an inexpensive restaraunt. This will allow you to nourish yourself and rest your feet in between the two. There's a good deal of walking involved. Enjoy.

Thanks for the suggestion. I guess I was thinking the zoo was lager, based on some of the previous posts and other things I've read.

Not far from the Zoo, there's a Supermercado Nacional. The serve a buffet lunch everyday that's not to be missed.

Lots of choices, all of it good.

That's great news, I was wondering what was close. I have eaten at other Supermercado Nationals and I know they put out good food.

Looking forward to at my day at the zoo and botanical garden during coming week

Can anyone tell me the approximate cost of a trip to the zoo? Entrance fees, train ride inside etc?

We are looking for a few things to do yet in the coming weeks before we have to sell our vehicle. Is it easy to drive to or is this something that could wait and take a bus/taxi ?

We would be with 5 of us - coming from Santiago.

I have been researching with no luck, looking for information on the whereabouts of an honest to goodness zoo in the D.R.
My girlfriend and her niece have never heard of one here but I recall someone posting information awhile ago, just can't find it under search.
Any info. would be appreciated.
Just thought it would be a great way to spend a day.

Yes there's a Zoo in DR, its name is; dr1 ;)

Went to Zoo and Botanical Garden Today

Started off at the zoo. Since I got there about time zoo opened, it looked like it would be a long wait for the train, so I walked in. Really not that much of a walk past some bird cages to where the animals are.

Good selection of animals and had no trouble seeing them all. But not a lot of activity, except when the attendants went around with food between 10 and 11. The animals I saw being fed were getting something that looked like sawdust. I wonder if that is all they get. But they seemed to like the food.

Some of the animals are in large areas with plenty of room to run and roam. Others in smaller enclosers. Only the birds and monkeys in cages, others separated from public by fence or moat.

Property was clean, seemed to be a lot of personell. No litter around.

Childrens zoo has good selection but since there were no children there when I was, did not see anything that made it stand out.

For lunch I walked to the recommended Supermercado Nacional. I can confirm they have an excellent buffet. But it is a long walk from the zoo. There are public cars going by the zoo that also pass Nacional, probably a good idea to take them since it is a very long walk to Nacional. If you walk or take the car, you want to go in the direction that takes you up the hill and into the small town. Not many eating choices in that area . I only passed one small Domincan restaurant that would be mainly good for sandwiches and a Chinese restaurant that se emed primarily for take out. By the food at Nacional was very good and inexpensive.

I got the impression from an earlier post that the Botanical Garden was very close to the zoo. Actually it is, but the entrance to the Garden is too far to walk, even for me who walks everyplace.

The Botanical Garden is beautiful, but very large. After having already walked so much, I was not up for making a complete circuit so went just to the orchid place and the Japanese Garden. A train was picking up a zilllion school children from the Japanese Garden when I was leaving and was very happy to be allowed to bum a ride back to the entrance.

The orchids were far from their peak, but the Japanese Garden was beautiful and very well maintained.

The experience of being the train for ride back to the entrance convinced me that this is probably the best way to see the Garden, at least first time. A guide was describing everything we passed via a microphone, so assume this is done on the entire trip through the park. At least at the Japanese Garden, the train was stopped so that the passengers could walk through the park. Because it is a 10 to 15 minute walk from the entrance, many may prefer to get there on the train. I know I was very happy not to have to walk back to the entrance.

At the zoo, I paid RD$100 to get into the zoo and RD$30 to get into the childrens zoo. At the Garden, because I have a cedula, I paid the RD$50 resident price. The sign said the foreigners are charged US$5. To get into the orchid place, I paid RD$30.

Seemed to be plenty of groundsmen and attendants at Garden, also.

To go from Nacional to the Botanical Garden, and from the Botanical Garden back to the city, I rode in the taxi of Leonardo. His cell phone is 809 457 4478. I can recommend him. If you want to go from the Zoo to the Botanical Garden, I would suggest calling him, likewise if you want to get back to the city from the Zoo or the Botanical Garden. Both the entrance and exit to the zoo and the botanical garden are off the beaten path as far as taxis are concerned, so it is good to have a number in your wallet that you can call if you dont have your own car.
