As a Senator with all the perks you should be making RD$4-500,000 per month (US$13,500) and that's without all the favors and kick backs. The monthly wage alone is enough to keep an average family here going for over two years.

As a Senator if you cannot become a multi US$ millionaire in the 6 year period, then you need to have a serious chat with your buddies.

Yes it's disgusting, but hey, Dominicans voted for them and sit by and do nothing, so they get what they deserve.

I have a feeling the money will run out long before the 6 year term.

So here we are with a congress completely controlled by The PLD. Senators jut got sworn in for a new term, haven't even started work yet and already decided to raise their salary by 50k pesos a month. It's going to be a loooong 6 years...

Tras tomar juramento senadores dicen se aumentar?n RD$ 50 mil - DiarioLibre.com

Excuse me while I throw up. Patriotas my ass.

I could do a better job than any of them for less than half that.

I'm also certain I love this country and it's people more than any of them, including Leonel.

I was going to ask how much they made a month but now it just makes me sad and ... well lets just keep it at sad..
We all need to keep talking about this and do something about it, turn up to protest, make your voices heard.

ok so we just heard on the news it will cost 3,444,000 US dollar per month for this pay rise, just the pay rise .....
Where is this money coming from? Can you really cut other funding that much?

I did not see a cut in the military budget...

That's correct Robert....Way before 6 years time, the external financing for the charade ongoing here and elsewhere is going to dry up like the Colorado River at the Mexican frontier.

Even if they were making $RD800,000 per month by the end of this 6 year term.....The peso will be about 60 per USD so it will be the same salary.

You would have thought it would have dried up a long time ago.

Need to look at the average per capita income. For a DR Senator to be making nearly the same annual salary as a U.S. Senator is absurd when considering the lower annual average salary and GDP of DR.

Just because I'm not from here should that make me any less concerned about the this country and what happens to it's people? ?
In most countries you go into government to follow a calling and go into business to make money but I'm sad to see the coin is flipped here.

Name one! I know of no US congressman/senator who comes out of office at the same net worth as when they went in. They are all millionares, and if you believe they are doing it for you then I have a bridge you need to buy.

Many here in the DR don't understand the concept of "free market" salaries whereby the market demand dictates the salary.

This is why politicians here can easily justify there salaries compared to American ones.

For example, a US Senator salary of US174,000 may seem high, but an engineer public works director of any medium to large city will make more:

Public Works Director Salary Survey

Furthermore, here in the DR professionals in other fields don't make near as much as their peers in the States. Another example is a chief engineer here in Santiago at the water treatment plant makes US15,000 while his counterpart in the States makes US90,000 or more for the same size city.

Also too is the cost of living, it is at least 40% of that of the US with comparable standard of living.

Factor that in as well and a justified salary of the politicians here should be no more than US25,000 at most a year, perks and all.
