I guess there was no option to force a poster to only be able to post in the Clown Bin.

I will differ with one point made about fruits and veggies in the DR. While I find that what is available here is good, the selection and quality I was used to having living in California was much better and varied than it is here. Those from the Northeast may have a different experience than I do.

Yanandu, for the last time, FreshDirect is NOT a leading NY supermarket, it is a gourmet delivery supermaket . You order online and they deliver to your place within a couple of days. You pay a premium for food-shopping while sitting on your ass.

People on budget don't shop at FreshDirect and in fact they don't deliver in area where there isn't a demand i.e you won't see their trucks in the 'hood :)

You might want use other prices as comparisons.

Say again?

You are wrong again!!!!

LMAO :) :) Nothing more to add.

You compare prices of supermarket that are online Yanandu. 99.9 % of people get off their ass and go shop :( I have nothing against Fresh Direct and the like but I cannot buy something fresh if I haven't seen or touch. Plus, they charge more AND you have to tip the delivery guy. It just doesn t make any sense to me.

The people that you allegedly know in NY are the opposite of what you are preaching. They could go to farmers market and there are coop now to buy local produces. It would end up half of the price you are quoting !!!

There are few supermarkets in NY - people I know use freshDirect or similar.

http://www.ams.usda.gov/mnreports/fvwretail.pdf

This gives carrots as 1.50 for 2 lbs. 30 pesos lb - about double prices in DR.

Look at other veg as well.

Other people's fish prices are high -
MaxDelivery Manhattan, NYC Same Day Delivery - Fish
Farmed tilapia above.

5 dollars / lb fillets in DR. ( 190 pesos ).

Actually I do compare prices in an expensive tourist area of DR. In other towns they are lower.

Actually, Yan is touching on a point that has been in the news/media lately, the so-called "food deserts" in big cities. Usually found in the low income neighborhoods of big cities where there are no large food stores offering a range of healthy foods within a reasonable walking distance. Reportedly, people in these areas must resort to fast food, etc., resulting in bad nutrition and obesity. I'm not necessarily saying I believe this or any other expose du jour of the idiots on T.V., but I do know that it can be tough to go food shopping using public transportation.

Yes, just at in the US where there are waterfalls a plenty in the Yosemite valley and none in NY when one chooses a location should you have a panache for waterfalls please choose your residence location carefully.
El Limon has one great waterfall and swimming hole here in the DR. A bijou residence in the locality will not be so expensive. Visit in the next few days after heavy rains.
There are many other locations featuring waterfalls in the DR.
But rather more with nice beaches for swimming and there is the possibility of residences with a waterfall feature associated with the swimming pool.

Believe it or not, there are quite a few that have closed down because of the economy.

I think a bigger problem is developing just like the DR where there is food inconsistency due to inflation and limited funds.

We don't care about France, or NYC or LA or anywhere but the DR...

In Santiago, there is a La Nacional on Sadhala.

I dont know where you lived man, but everywhere I have ever lived in the United States, except for downtown Los Angeles, has been within a 15 minute walk to a supermarket. In Miami I could walk to a Publix or an IGA Farmers Market. Upstate NY I could walk to a Price Chopper or a Shop n Save. In NY, like I said above, I would go to Pathmark. In Santiago, there is a La Nacional on Sadhala. LA was different because it required a bit of a hike up Sunset Boulevard to get to the stores. So I dont know where you stayed unless it was in the boonies or the desert but there are plenty supermarkets available.

In Los Jardines (Santiago) there are colmados on almost every corner and certainly within a 5 minute walk.
