Because there are several people that think it is a fun sport to train them to kill and fight them, and several people that have come in contact with those dogs have been killed or seriously injured. Thus the ban in certain areas where this has been a very big problem.

Totally agree. I have two toddlers barely taller than these dogs and pay close attention to the dog owners as I approach them. So many times, I run into owners that have no control of their dogs and if the dog was to launch at one of my child, I'd end up with at best a disfigured child :(

I love dogs and have nothing against pitbulls and Rotweiller (or big dogs in general), but I would say 75 % of their owners have no business owning them. So I wouldn't call stupid when they attempt to control them (ban may be extreme, but muzzle would be a good idea).

Yes Mam you are 100% correct. Dogs are face biters especially with children because of the level of interaction. If people who read this would take heed by not allowing any dog other than the family long time pet (and even they have bad days) to be with their child they could save a lot of pain. If you think your little "Fluffy" is just a sweetheart get them out very early in the morning with a bunch of other Fluffies and something is going to get hurt.

Its so true that at least 75 % of the people that have big dogs are not able to handle them correctly and when an accident occurs, its the dog who gets the blame, not the owner.

I am not a fan of Pitbulls (American or English) and Staffordshires, these breeds are still not genetically brought back to their original gene pool. Too much Pitbulls still have fighting lines in them and too much of these dogs fall into inexperienced hands.

But then again, falling back onto my original beginning, too much big dogs are handled incorrectly by their owners with too frequently bad consequences.

To give you an example : a friend of us owns a Rotweiller, pure bred with an IPOI level which means that the owner and dog have worked for more then three years on training heavy obedience and security work. They lived in Perla Marina. Because they had a little yard and the Rotweiller is a real action dog, the owner decided to have daily walks with the dog...bad idea one day. She hadn't walked for more then 500M as two big dogs escaped from the garden of another property and started to challenge the Rotweiller. ONLY because the Rotweiller came from very good stock AND had a descent training and every confidence in his owner, she was able to keep him concentrated on her by calling his name and let him sit and stay calm whilst under attack by the other two dogs. ONLY because she knew how to assess the situation immediately through experience, she stayed also very calm, seeking no eye contact with the challenging dogs so they did not attack her. The owner of the two loose dogs (the Rotweiller was on the leash), had the greatest trouble in getting her two dogs back into her yard and "apologized" behind the closed gate.
The first thing the owner of the Rotweiller did was get the hell back home, praise her dog for his excellent behaviour and then started to think...what about if a child should walk passed that house with a dog (small or big) and these dogs escape again?? What about some yelling children, like all children do, should race their bike next to that gate and the dogs escape again??

I appreciate the marvellous input here on this thread and the delightful pictures. But, to go back to the original question which was addressed by some so far, where or how can one purchase a Great Dane in this country? Would it maybe be better to import one to here?

Thank you.

It was answered. There was a post with a link to ads with several GD's.

Irish Wolfhounds are even bigger. Some people would like to keep a horse or a leopard in their house ; a few pythons, tarantulas too. And of course some candiru and piranha in the pond.

Wolfhounds are beautiful beasts, probably my favourite of all dog breads, deer hounds a close second, the most wonderful nature and extremely loyal.

This is Sabre, my last dog, the photo doesn't do him justice of his size. On his back legs he would dwarf me.

These big dogs would sell well in RD..... but we'd need to ship them in by container..... too big for the little dog crates.

I always wanted a lot of property with wolfhounds running loose...."Hound of the Baskervilles"

two of my neighbours have great danes. one is seriously big and quite dumb, as it seems :) he wears one ear over his head, always. very pretty but does not like people and i cannot pat him :(
second one is still young, very thin (might have been sick or runaway as i did not see him for a while). real houdini because he has sereval ways of getting out of the property. the owners block old exits and he makes new ones. super lovely. he run out the other day when we were walking our goggies and made friends with our baby rottie (well, she's 10 months but still a baby, right?). i patted him and he licked me.

i have little fear of big dogs. respect, yea. but fear, no. i see if i can approach a dog and if the owner is around i will ask if i can give big fellow a little pat. i think dog sense my feelings and they do not show aggression.
one of our neighbours in the farmacia has the biggesr rottie i have ever seen. some sort of a mutant, i swear. head as big as a bucket, each foot bigger than mine and tail stump as big as my two fists. easily 80kg. when i saw him i run outside the pharmacy, politely asked if i can and then have him lots of hug. boy, was he happy :)

I had a Great Dane once. My yard went from perfectly level to looking like a motocross track after a few months. That dog could generate some pretty impressive piles of poop?

Maybe because of that? (seriously)
We do daily Poop Patrol. Those multiple bags given by the supermercado come in handy...

I had Wolfhounds and Rotties when I lived in the States - if you ever achieve your dream be prepared to do a "body sweep" of the property before mowing...... I lived out in the country with a fair bit of land and I would rather pick up the rabbits, squirrels, cats etc than run over them with the mower.....

Talk about big dog owners that need to know and keep control of their dogs - well bred wolfhounds are very in tune with their sight-hound heritage and if it runs they will hunt it and usually catch it. A wonderful sight to see them with room to really open up and run full speed.

They are heart breakers though - average life span is short compared to most but Wolfhounds cram more love and affection into those years than most other dogs do into double the years.

Big dogs are crazy expensive to ship from country to country however and when I took up my wandering life I switched over to a mini Aussie - a lot of athlete in a little package, smart, brave like a lion and can travel as my carry on - what's not to love?

You'll need a large yard. We have 1000sm, and it's almost too small for ours. He barely gets running before he has to stop. GD's like to run.
