Sure Chip! Whatever you say is the truth and nothing but the real truth of us Dominicans in our own country! (We just don't know it yet or realize it, as we're too uneducated to make "sense" of it as we go about biz)

And for whatever it might be of service to you, that "family" you tout as living on the between USD$316 and USD$527, are just "poor" households that can't sustain a pole breakpoint above the USD$527 to be bracketed in the "low" income level... That means they're part of the 0.4% from the "poor" HH struggling to become "low" income or at least stay within the 0.6% closer to it... If they're ever to reach that goal and become "low" income HHs, they'll need to keep their HHI between USD$527 and USD$922 to be called a low income household...

You forget Pichardo that while my family is poor they are Dominican!

They may be poor but are not ashamed of it because their income is honest, something too many wealthy people can't say!

Also, unfortunately, according to your numbers they don't exist!

Finally, I have a new saying in Spanish: "mejor que te digan pobre y pendejo que ser tiguere y rico pero condenado pa' siempre.

Whenever being poor relates to shame?

Oh! They do exist, just not where you and some others here want them to be! Again... Reading and using sense to see the 0.4% and 0.6% from the poor and the low income are where they belong and are accounted for...

You just won't get it because it will be admitting you were wrong, as it's the case of the other lot of pundits around here...

Much thanks to the OP for the cost of living info and to those that brought the thread back to its original point.

I suggest that PICHARDO and Chip do not make any more posts in this thread, unless it 100% relates to the OP.

If you want to continue your snipes ate each other, do it in the "Off-Topic" forum, if I see anymore in this thread, then I'll just erase all your posts on this thread.

Carry on...

So basically, Picardo, if I'm an investor, you're going to tell me that 46% of the population is middle class and above (with middle class starting at over $1,000K per month). So, I do the math. The country has approximately 10 million people and I think, "ok, 4.6 million people make over $1000K per month." But in reality, you've decided that 5 million (hypothetically - I don't know the number for the extreme poor) don't count and forgotten to tell me. Your 46% is based on the 5 million people that count. So while I think my potential market is 4.6 million, it's really 2.3 million. You're neglecting to tell me the total population you're using to base your percentages on is called UNETHICAL. A snowjob, a lie, etc.

300/month is maybe 1-2 date nights per month in NYC and you arent going to per se, or peter lugars.

you are right it isnt apples to apples. 4 of us had a nice meal at porterhouse in santo domingo with drink, steak, and desert for 1200rd each. tip and tax included. That meal in NYC is 2500rd each at the same level restaurant or lower.

I had a dinner date at another steakhouse for 2500rd total, appetizers, alcohol, steaks, and desert.

As long as you stay away from the tourist and money traps you should have find good quality food at dominican prices. That being said you can easily find plenty of expensive places to eat.

But i dont think i have ever paid more than 3500rd for a dinner for 2 ever in santo domingo and i am not talking about eating at cafeterias. In NYC you can spend that on your drink tab alone

My memory may be fuzzy but the lat time I ate at Porterhouseit was more like 10k pesos for 2. Maybe we had more drinks than you guys did, but Porterhouse is expensive and it wasn't very good. I remember thinking for those prices Icould eat at The Palm, Smith And Wollenskys or Fogo DE Chao in the states.

Heck Outback is good for 2500 for dinner. If it makes everyone feel better the same Outback meal in Sao Paulo costs double what it did in SDQ. Sure local places cost less but once we are talking imported beef, DR costs more than US in most cases.

I've read a lot of topics on this site ,but this takes the cake. Santo Domingo is not an expensive city compared to where Santiago or La Vega I live on Chicago's Gold Coast one of the most expensive area in the US. I would love to know how a family can spend almost 10,000 USD in two months in a city like Santo Domingo, not Beverly Hills or London but Santo Domingo PLEASE!!!

Those prices are accurate but have in mind that the OP spends money without much care. That style of living is upper middle class in SD. There's a bunch of areas where the OP can lower their cost and not impact their quality of life. I can do the same style of living on 3500 while saving the rest. In reality I won't spend more than 2,500 in SD with a family but that's cutting on some luxuries like Restaurants, etc...

Lets say you Keiser was standing on the side of my building as I walked up I make one phone call to 911 and a car is shining a light in your face in 60 seconds. You are responding to a post about Santo Domingo and talking about crime in my city please tell me your joking. I was not bragging I live in Chicago I know my city is the best. The reason is I pay 2,500USD for a studio apartment, and pay about 850USD for leasing my car including insurance also 400USD for parking. Those are always you two highest expenses home and car payment and you can see I'm way below 5,700 for the month. Lastly no matter how you spin it what you buy or don't there is not a chance you can have the same lifestyle in Santo Domingo affluent neigborhoods that you would in LA, Chicago,Houston or New York the reason being CRIME. When you need a arm guard outside of your residence so you can feel safe I'm sorry but that is not a upper class living. I love Santo Domingo but it is not a place I see myself spending almost 11,000USD in two months for living expenses Paris, Rome maybe even Tokyo, but Santo Domingo NO NO NO!!!!!

You know your city is the best! How are those friendly Chicago winters treating you? I hope you have pictures of palm trees in that $2500 studio payaso!

I have question do most of you guys live in Dominican Republic? If so I am not trying to sound like I'm bragging. I like the cold thank you. I know maybe you Tamborista want to feel so proud that your living in the DR and trying to make me bad because I live in a cold weather city try again. Look at what two people not five or six two people spent on food alone at the store and the resturants. If he is working and going to the gym look at total cost of food now look at the gym something does not add up. Learn how to analyze data before you comment, and if they are spending around 5500 a month in SD if they live in San Juan PR or Panama City they would be around 12,000 a month are you kidding. Saying thats like Oprah moving to London saying wow London is expensive. BTW they have no kids and if they have that kind of money to spend freely why not live in PR

There are some beautiful apartments in the gold coast section of CHI.

JMB, the OP did not choose to live in DR. One of them is there on work assignment. You talk also talked about the necessity for armed guards. Dont most of these properties in the u.s. have security guards? dont most residential communities have security teams.

BTW there is plenty to do in santo domingo. The dominican republic might be viewed as a 3rd world country but Santo Domingo is still the capital city. There are plenty of beautiful homes, and properties in Santo Domingo. There is plenty of opportunity to spend money.

This couple has chosen one of those paths.
