    So sad.....

That's on Independencia isn't it, in Gazcue near to the cemetery?

    Interest rates

Oooh, hold on, let me put on my "completely shocked" face.

    Interest rates

Yes probably. The banks publish their rates, but you can normally get a better rate if you ask the person who deals with your account - they call the central people and can offer you a better rate (at least that's how it's always worked for me)

    Interest rates

Most banks offer deposit certificates in pesos for a fixed term of 1 or 3 months and up to 12 months. The rate is currently about 9% annual equivalent for a 3 month certificate depending on the amount invested. Dollar rates are very low at banks

    Residency Process Easier for Some.

I don't think your residency expires as such. If you don't renew on time, they charge you a fine for not renewing on time (which is quite a lot of money). If you want to rescind your residency there will be a process for that but unless you go through with that you have to either renew on...

Abinader forms committee to oversee the Santo Domingo Integrated Plan

For those of us who live here it isn't dangerous at all. For tourists it would be though, they tend to walk around with their expensive phones in their hands, lots of jewelry etc. I was on a cruise in Rio de Janeiro and we had multiple communications that we needed to be low-key, there...

Abinader forms committee to oversee the Santo Domingo Integrated Plan

When you think about what this country has done at Punta Cana, literally from zero to the biggest tourist resort in the Caribbean, starting with only a dirt track and nothing, I think to build a beach on the Malecon is very possible.

Abinader forms committee to oversee the Santo Domingo Integrated Plan

The best idea would be to build a massive bridge from the east side of the bay to join up with Avenida España, which would also act as a breakwater, that way they could then drain part of the bay and create beaches. It would be very expensive to do, but cruise ships are very big business.

Abinader forms committee to oversee the Santo Domingo Integrated Plan

They have been doing reasonably well with getting motorbikes riders to wear helmets and have their registration number on the helmet. It's way more enforced in the capital than in other parts of the country for sure. And they've also had some success in keeping trucks off the Malecon, there...

Abinader forms committee to oversee the Santo Domingo Integrated Plan

I have been on so many cruises around the Caribbean, probably over 30 now. And so many places you stop are incredibly boring, unless you want to sit on a beach there is nothing to see. Santo Domingo will sit alongside places like Cartagena and San Juan as being a place that the history...

TSA announces ban on 16 items from passengers' checked bags

Provided you are travelling to or from the US.

Abinader forms committee to oversee the Santo Domingo Integrated Plan

If they do build the cruise port (next to Adrian Tropical) this is going to require a lot of changes to the Malecon. You can't have 5000 tourists getting off a cruise ship and walking into 4 lanes of trucks whizzing by. I could see this would mean the Malecon would have to be pretty much...

BUS Puerto Plata -> Las Terrenas

On their Insta they give the number for their Puerto Plata office as 829 578 8477 or 809 376 8346. Try adding those to Whatsapp, one of them will work, and then send them a message (in Spanish). (Hola, quiero confirmar si el servicio desde Puerto Plata hacia Las Terrenas saldrá a la 1pm...

BUS Puerto Plata -> Las Terrenas

I would be surprised if anyone said yes, and if they did they would charge you a crazy price. Tourist buses are chartered by the tour operators, they aren't going to be at all happy if the drivers allow spare people to get on. In addition, I think you'll find that the majority of people...

    Jet Set Disaster

Given how many super important well connected people died, does anyone really believe that the owner of this club will walk free? If he hasn't returned to DR yet I think he'd be very well advised never to come back. The judiciary is pretty much owned and controlled by those families, someone...

BUS Puerto Plata -> Las Terrenas

Asotrapusa is a reasonably big company, I've called them many times (on the Santo Domingo number) and they always answer and provide the info quickly. That journey would definitely take 4 hours and I suspect there are only two services per day from Puerto Plata to Las Terrenas.

    Fake first responder arrested

I keep hearing stories of people refusing to release bodies to bereaved families unless money changes hands. Belongings being stolen from corpses lying in the ruins. And now this. Horrendous.

JetSet Club tragedy: 184 confirmed deaths

Also would the vibration of the speakers attached to the ceiling be a factor? Over a long period of time the vibration from bass booms may affect the structure? Or am I being stupid
