Anyone know the extent and locations of the recent flooding? Looks like it's pretty extensive:

If you are heading toward Samana, it maybe difficult for several days. This photo was taken on the main highway just before Nagua.

It begs the question why? Why are the cities flooded like that. Here in STI we have some flooded streets too and I think we are above the rivers.

take a look around. do you see trash heaps next to rubbish bins? people dropping trash out of cars? when it starts to rain all this crap flows towards drains and blocks them solid. then there is mud, debris, dead animals and fecal matter from overflowing sewage. you have the infrastructure that is lacking - too narrow, too small, too old - and people who make bad situation even worse.

There were huge rains in the hills two nights ago which caused massively swollen rivers.
I just cycled up to Los Brazos to have a look and there i was told that the water was very nearly to the height of the bridge....that is some 8mts or so from its usual level! I asked a local the last time it was so high and he told me he had never seen it like this

The level at Los Brazos may have dropped considerably but there is still a huge amount of water flowing downstream and in Islabon they told me levels are still rising.

The bridges in Islabon and Sabaneta that normal overlook rivers are now overlooking flood plains....there is just water as far as you can see.

There was a collection of donations of food and clothing outside Janets today which had a good response.
I have been in touch with the French woman organising it to see if she can distribute more donations over the coming days.

Have friends in El Pozo, Nagua. We (chica and me) spoke with them earlier today. Lots of rain but no flooding.

WindGuru Forecast

... LT on Saturday - flying into El Catey - we should be ok, si?

"WindGuru" (which is quite reliable) says RAIN (for a few days).
As we have just had a very wet week expect a lot of mossies, too.

Don't shoot the messenger....No tengo la culpa. ;)

Tom

Everywhere has good big storm drains, perfect for throwing rubbish down in the eyes of the typical dom.

"Drains"? Sabaneta has drains? What follows the high water is much worse health wise than the actual flood. Move away to another low income barrio at higher elevation and not next to a river.
