President Luis Abinader announced the new Office for the Development of Urban and Interurban Mobility Projects. The new government entity is in charge of designing, building and developing urban and interurban mass transportation projects, among other roles related to transport.

The Office for the Development of Urban and Interurban Mobility Projects is a division of the Ministry of the Presidency.

The Presidency created the division with Decree 389-21, dated 18 June 2021. The decree had not been released to the general public until 27 July 2021.

The decree says the new office will design, build and develop urban and interurban mass transport projects. It will design, build and develop infrastructures associated to these projects. It will also structure trusts and/or public entities or public-private entities to maintain and commercialize transport...

Translation:
Luis is going to rid the country of the sydico/ carritos in the all of the major
metro/ highly populated areas once and for all. The only unfortunate side is
the prices will definitely increase as "private partnerships" are business interest
and business interest invest to make money, not friends. Sadly this will have a negative
impact on the poor who have the least, hence them being the people who use these
carritos the most.

I read recently that Luis is worth a cool 75 million USD. Comes from a very wealthy
family. He attended Harvard as well. Doubt he's ever had to budget his meager earnings
so to afford food, rent and transportation.
Also, there are several thousand carrito chofers working in this country. Some can barely read.
What will they do for an existence?
Fix one problem, create another?

I think he has the team to do it. It won't be easy, that's for sure, but I bet we're going to see major changes.

How far they reach is another question. Something drastic has to be done about SD traffic.

It took me almost 6 hours in a car to visit my doctor for 1/2 hour. Sheesh.

It would be nice if they start limiting the amount of vehicle imports
each year but I think we have a better chance of seeing snow in
Santo Domingo.
If they are not careful we will end up like Puerto Rico where they
have more cars than people.
A more reasonable (and long overdue) approach would be better citizen
security so people would feel safer while using public transportation.

CR, I'm surprised you would say that. I take guaguas in SDE and SD a lot. I feel very safe.

On the other hand, my kid's grandad got robbed by an alleged taxista. He is pretty vulnerable looking but that shouldn't matter. I am a bit wary of unmarked taxistas now.

They may be safer now but back in 2014 while living on the eastside I witnessed more than
one snatch and grab while stuck in traffic.
