The Santo Domingo Metro office has been gradually adding more cars to expand the service given the growing demand for the fast transit service. The fast service and fares as low as RD$20 have made the metro the main transport system in the capital city.
Metro office director Rafael Santos Perez mentioned that the government heavily subsidizes the fares, when speaking at the Almuerzo Semanal Corripio. He said the fares should be RD$80 per fare, compared to the actual low of RD$20. The government operates with a deficit of RD$2.7 billion, but some of this is compensated by promotion charges.
He said on an average day the Metro will transport around 400,000 passengers. On Tuesday, 4 March 2025, for instance, 200,855 pax used Line 1; 187,0000 used Line 2 and 11,639 the skylift.
Santos Perez said that as of July 2025, the routes will be using six-car trains instead...
