The Santo Domingo Metro office has been gradually adding more cars to expand the service given the growing demand for the fast transit service. The fast service and fares as low as RD$20 have made the metro the main transport system in the capital city.
Metro office director Rafael Santos Perez mentioned that the government heavily subsidizes the fares, when speaking at the Almuerzo Semanal Corripio. He said the fares should be RD$80 per fare, compared to the actual low of RD$20. The government operates with a deficit of RD$2.7 billion, but some of this is compensated by promotion charges.
He said on an average day the Metro will transport around 400,000 passengers. On Tuesday, 4 March 2025, for instance, 200,855 pax used Line 1; 187,0000 used Line 2 and 11,639 the skylift.
Santos Perez said that as of July 2025, the routes will be using six-car trains instead of three-car trains, reducing the long queues for the rides. He expects the wait time to board a train to be reduced to three minutes in peak hours from around 13 minutes. Metro users, nevertheless, say wait times of more than an hour are not uncommon during peak hours.
Santos Perez commended Dominican metro riders saying that even when people have to wait, the lines are organized and dynamic.
He spoke of the extension of line 2C from km 9 to Los Alcarrizos, a densely populated area.
He observed that it is the responsibility of city governments to avoid vendors selling outside the metro stations, in contrast to the order inside the Metro stations.
