While traveling outside the US, You can carry up to $9,999.99. Yes, not 10,000.00. When it hits 10 grand you will automatically have to fill an IRS form. This is while you are in the airport. They know exactly how much you are carrying when you enter. There are metallic strips inbed into the paper and as soon as you walk across the metal detectors it tells the guards. Ever notice they look up when you walk through. So do not carry 10 thousand on you. Carry 9.
Just my 2 cents.

If you wear a tinfoil hat it blocks their mechanism from functioning and you can bring in more than 10k.
is the one I wear.
On topic- Just bring in 9k and be done with it, get the rest sent over thru WU or caribe express.
if someone wanna bring a big amount of legal money to the DR, why recommend to use ripp off companies like Western Union or Caribe Express where you pay high Fees?
below 10 grand is fine without the need to declare the cash on any report.
if you travel with Friends split the money and of course do not declare yourselves as one Group/Family, so you can take below 10 grand Each adult Traveler in your group.
for large Sums above such possibilities, keep it on a bank account in your homecountry and bring just your Debit Card for that account, use the money when ever you need it.

Because debit cards have daily withdrawals limits, wells fargo in US has 300$ per day limit and HSBC in UK has 400$ per day limit, I've tried with both to remove these limits and they say it's impossible.
The way you suggested with friends was exactly how 3 guys got 25k taken from them recently so that was a horrible suggestion.
Recommending WU and Caribe are from experience of building a house here, it is well worth the cost and safety of getting your money this way.
This has been covered 100 times - wiring the money to a lawyer or directly to the builder is how to do it.
I always went through the lawyer to the builder who drove an hour to pick up the check.
Never had a questionnaire or form to fill out - land purchase thru buildout = mucho dinero.
Life need not be difficult.
Agree w/ Mike the Weatherman - up your cards' limits.
If your current bank won't do it - switch banks.
Mine are $1,000/day - I upped from the $300 by e-mail.
What is the fuss? You just keep trying until it works.
