While we may disagree with the philisophical, political or economic reasons that wars are entered into, I think most of us can agree that the soldiers who are doing the difficult, dangerous and ugly job of fighting those wars are doing so because they believe in a greater good. On November 11, we are not paying tribute to the powers that be in deciding to enter into conflict, we are remembering and honouring those who sacrificed their lives for what they belived to be a greater cause. This sacrifice marks them as braver and greater people than many of us (myself included).

Thank you, Grahame, for the beautiful sentiment in starting this thread.

I am an ex Marine 1976-1980...Always....I served all of my time at Camp Pendleton CA, I never saw any action....there wasn't much going on during that time, but I do understand the sacrifice that has been made to allow me to live the life that I live. This is a day of NEVER FORGETTING, and RESPECT.

Although I am a pacifist by religious conviction, I understand that it is the bravery of men and women like you who have allowed me to practice that religion.

You have my deepest gratitude for your service to our nation... no matter where you served.

Once a Marine, always a Marine.

What's that? A posh upper class limp wristed ex-Etonian trying to score cheap political points with the chavs and chav-nots back home? Wasn't it his type that marched the plebs into the 14-18 war and sipped tea from their estates while the chavs suffered trench foot? History sure has a bitchy way of repeating itself guv!
Considering his grandfather was wounded in the second world war I think your comment loses some of its steam.

Thank You....

"They shall grow not old, as we who are left grow old. Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun, and in the morning, we will remember them".

My personal thanks to ALL (no matter what country, which service, what religion, what persuasion) who fell for the freedom of us all. ~ Grahame.

for remembering.

A special and personal Thanks and prayer to those who served on, and those who never made it back from, "Hill 937."

PLEASE Robert/Moderators!!!!!!!

This is a thread with the intent of remembering the fallen (particularly of World Wars one & two but a couple after would be acceptable!!).

This is NOT a thread for posting political beliefs/ideologies as I thought would have been apparent to all!

Would you please be so kind as to clear it up so that it relates PURELY to, & remembers with respect, the fallen servicemen & women of ANY country, of ANY religion, of ANY persuasion.

A bit of respect for the people who died to help what they thought would be freedom throughout the world, is not too much to ask is it? ~ Grahame.

Apologies, I have been out of the loop for a few days traveling, so missed a few threads. I will keep my eye on this and make sure the idiots are kept out or deleted.

Was this in Nam?

I assume

And may I add, please,

all those Vets who are now homeless and shattered on the Streets of America

and the ONE THIRD of our military who came home from Gulf1 and filed for disability

and the countless others

of all nations

who are still suffering in the Persian Gulf

until this madness stops

come all ye bold seamen

wherever you're bound

and always let Nelson-s proud memory
go round
and

pray that the wars and the tumult may cease

for the
greatest of gifts
is a sweet lasting peace

may the Lord put an end
to these cruel old wars

and bring peace and contentment
to
all our brave Tars

Sadly, Grahame, we United Staters celebrate this deep rememberence with many wars after the Big One.

the list is very long

and many of the fallen

never put on a uniform

November 11th has a lot of significance for me as my father was a veteran of WWII. First Canadian Paratroop battalion with British wings, US wings and then Canadian. They dropped him off the target in France and he was MIA and then finally POW in Leipzig.

He always talked about the "Cossacks" (Russia) who came in to the camp to liberate them playing a big piano on a flatbed truck. He also talked about how they once ground down bricks and put the brick dust in cocoa cans from their Red Cross supplies to trade with their German captors. He got good and drunk once and tossed a lot of his war memorabilia in a big bonfire.

He was proud of his service and and he persuaded some American draft dodgers to go back home after they spent the weekend sleeping in our barn in Niagara. All he received for 5 years of service was $500 and a wool blanket. He didn't even get glasses covered. I know because I read his records when I worked for Veteran's Affairs with the permission of the director who was also paratrooper. He thinks they were dropped into occupied territory deliberately and history will eventually reflect that. I think the whole experience led to a shorter life expectancy for my father who died at 62.

I hope today's veterans will be treated better. If that's political I apologize, I'm a pacifist but I believe the young men and women who put a uniform deserve to be taken care and supported.

" All Gave SOME, SOME Gave ALL!"

As a Vietnam veteran I know how it felt to come home and be treated as an "Outcast".
I am happy to report that things have improved dramatically since those days! It is now "OK", to "Hate the War, and yet "Love the Warriors".
I was moved on "11/11/11" to be honored, along with all veterans, at a series of events at the hospital in Boston, where I worked for 25 years, before moving to the DR in 1996.
There was a "breakfast",followed by a "Veterans Forum",followed at 1pm,by an interfaith service in the hospital's chapel.During the breakfast I was recognized as a Vietnam veteran who was awarded a "Purple Heart", and the "Silver Star", I recieved a standing ovation, which did a lot to help me ease the pain of being "Forgotten" for the last 40 years!
I spent some time in Southeast Asia after the war, mainly Thailand. The "Thai's" tell the story of how Thailand and Burma were ready to go to war against each other.Instead of sending opposing armies against eachother, the king of Thailand, and the king of Burma, mounted their war elephants and "Had A Go" at one another. The king of Thailand won,the dispute was settled, the armies went home! Sounds like an idea who's time has come again.
Except that "Obama" is kind of small! :cheeky:
