A 15-year old survivor of burns during the Salcedo carnival on 10 March 2024 was flown to a hospital in Boston for a better chance at recovery. Staff at the Dr. Robert Reid Cabral Children’s Hospital in Santo Domingo made the connections to take the child abroad. The 15-year old is one of 18 persons, seven adults and 11 children, who were affected by burns when an imprudent man set off fireworks and the costumes of several participants, including many children, caught on fire. So far, ten people, including many children, have died of the burns.

The director of the public hospital, Dr. Mabel Jones said the teenager suffered burns on 50% of his body and had been showing notable clinical improvement over the past 15 days, making the transfer possible.
