A couple of years ago Mr mat came in a 5 am and did not shut the gate properly. I heard one of our dogs barking but thought nothing of it. At 6 am the gardener woke us up to say the three dogs were missing. Mr Mat went right and I went left. I found someone who saw them passing, someone else saw them in the pool of a local hotel, someone else saw them at the local school. Finally someone had seen them on the motorway. No sign anywhere. After 2 hours of searching I returned home to see them sitting outside the gate.

Wasn't sure whether to kill them or be so relieved to see them to give them a hug!!

Glad you found your donkeys!!! BTw in the campo in the mountains, the police station has cells - not for humans but for donkeys. Those that wander off and eat crops from other farmers are arrested!!!

Thanks for all the great comments and care everyone!!

Belgiank - That's a lovely story!! Some people are just so kind! This evening we walked by a man working on a fence for his cows. We asked if we could possibly buy about 5 or 6 of his fence poles if he had any extra, in order to fix a dodgy bit in our fence... and he said we would be happy to give them to us for free, and told us how to get to his house so we could come by for coffee sometime soon! :)

Peter - Good plan!! Although, as we discovered on our walk this evening, EVERYONE in town will now know where to take the two runaway donkeys next time (hopefully there won't be one... but if there is). We got 'Did you find your donkeys?!??' 'Where were your donkeys??' and 'Hope your donkeys are okay!!" from most everyone we passed! :)

Matilda - hahaha well I'm certainly glad our donkeys didn't end up in one of those donkey jails!!! They did seem to be doing a lot of eating along the way, as it took them about 6 hours to get 2 km!!

Also, glad your dogs returned home on their own that time.... But understand the half wanted to hug them and half wanted to strangle them! I have two absolutely lovely / naughty doggies of my own! ;)

Runaway donkey photos to come shortly!

I think you can safely conclude that you've 'arrived' - great way to get the outward signals of acceptance into a community; didn't take long, did it? :)

The reason you now need some ID on your donkeys is so that you now don't become the receiving point for everyone else's wandering donkeys..... 'Oh look Jose, wandering donkeys. Must be the gringos', we'd better return them.........' :cheeky:

Now THAT Ms. B is a good idea, except for the drunks, they eventually sober up and find their way back.

OK tflea, strike the drunks, stick with the wandering & feebleminded. Nationality flag on one side, address of nearest Consular location on the other........

I have a donkey,he is with me now for a bout 13 Years, and escaped regulary,he was a real Houdini.I used to run after him if I saw it happening with no succes,if he didn't want me to catch him there was no way I would get him back.I would leave him a couple of days enjoying his "walkabouts"and then go and fetch him.All I had to do is ask peole and I would find him, call him over and he would come with me,he gets bored after a few days.
About half a year ago a female arrived at the fence,my donkey very happy, and they walked together up and down the fence chatting to each other.I had no idea where she came from. After about 2 months her walking the fence up and down I decided enough was enough and let her in.The two are very happy together and don't want to leave anymore even when the gate is open.Donkeys are great animals.
