The United Nations has designated 25 November as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. The day was chosen because it honors the three Dominican Mirabal sisters, murdered by orders of former Dictator Rafael Leonidas Trujillo.

It is a day for reflection on how society can foster an awareness to reduce violence against women. In the Dominican Republic, Attorney General official statistics reveal that 56 women have been murdered by their spouses so far this year, compared to 55 in all of the 2020. The Fundación Vida sin Violencia has counted 76 femicides from January to November. In pre-pandemic year 2019, femicides were at least 89.

On occasion of the non-violence against women day, feminist groups call for public policies to educate and prevent aggressions against women from an early age.
