Local fishermen found a 40-foot boat in the Atlantic Ocean coastal waters with 14 skeletal remains on 6 August 2024 off Río San Juan, located in the María Trinidad Sánchez province on the country’s northern coast, the Navy confirmed.

What is most shocking is that the corpses on the boat are most likely of Africans. These could have been people headed from Africa’s west coast to the Canary Islands in Spain. The 1,000-mile crossing to the Canary Islands is one of the most commonly used and dangerous routes to Europe for migrants from Africa.

Upon learning of the situation from an area fisherman, the Dominican Republic Navy (ARD) located the drifting vessel with the human remains approximately 10 nautical miles off the coast of Río San Juan. The remains were found in an advanced state of decomposition, alongside with 60 backpacks and 20 cell phones. Additionally...

The interesting detail regarding this isn’t fully registered in most people. Senegal isn’t widely present when you see the breakdown of the African component in the DR (in this case represented by “Senegambia”) outside of Spanish-speaking countries in Latin America. It’s there, but always those that have it are a minority of the people. Yet, among Dominicans Senegambia is almost always present. I call the Senegambia part a silent marker of Latin Americans from Spanish-speaking countries, because even when the African is a trace, such as in the Mexicans, and so small it isn’t always visible in the features, Senegambia is always there.

The main reason for this is that the first impulse of African slavery in the Americas took place in the 1500’s and the Spanish took most of their African slaves at that time from the coastal areas of Senegal, Gambia and even inland into Mali. One thing that becomes obvious when looking at the DNA results of African Americans is that in general their African component is not made up of 2 impulsea but rather 1. This also makes sense since in the English colonies the major influx of African slaves was in the 1700’s while in places like the Dominican Republic there was the first influx of the 1500’s (1st impulse), then it died down in the 1600’s and then it picked up again in the 1700’s (2nd impulse). During the 1st impulse practically all the Africans were from the Senegal region, but during the 2nd impulse the bulk were from the Bight of Benin (Guinea - Nigeria).

In today’s Listín Diario there is the story of one of the Senegalese that was in the yola that came to shore in Río San Juan. Already knowing what I explained in the first 2 paragraphs, I immediately thought how ironic. A Senegalese finishes in the DR which is one of the few countries outside of Africa where Senegal is actually widespread in the people despite it’s very old, some 400 - 500 years old or maybe more. That yola could had ended up anywhere and yet, it ended up in one of the few places where percentagewise his people had the most influence. Because other than the DR and a few other countries, Senegal is the only other country where at least partial Senegalese origin is widespread.

Anyone that descends from the first Africans in the New World will have Senegal in their veins.

Europe
It’s in La Cantera. Those who take the main road frequently… it’s where you have a curve after passing the former Bahia Principe hotel.

They think they were heading to las Canarias to enter the EU.
Sad situation.
