Jazz is the least popular of all music at this time. *So it makes sense for them to have jazz bands since this is the DR. I still suspect it might not have been jazz. *Any musicians actually there to comment on what they are playing.*

When I took the photo, it wasn't jazz they were playing.

There will be a band playing again tonight, not sure of the genre.

It was great seeing so many folks (locals, Expats and tourists) enjoying he music (jazz and non jazz) last night. Closing the street for weekends would be such a step forward for Sosua.

Oh and no one seemed to be complaining :)

Another good crowd Friday night. The minister of tourism of Puerto Plata, Lorenzo Sancasini was in attendance observing the festivities.

I spent more time there last night and actually heard some complaints from some of the tourists at the eastern end of the street. They were "explaining" to me how they didn't fly down to the Dominican Republic to listen to a jazz band on Pedro Clisante. I kept my comments to myself.

Also the new bar "Flame Sports Bar" was open for business last night.

Pedro and all that Jazz.
Chairs and tables should be allowed on the sidewalks at all establishments in a small tropical tourist town.
Otherwise don't grant a business licence to operate.

You can go anywhere to hear Jazz....for tourists it should be local music. Expats look for music from back home, tourists look for "culture" of the country they are visiting.

Are you suggesting a Jazz moratorium be imposed in Sosua?
Soon, there will be no chicas, no seats, and no Coltrane, what will be left?

You would think. I can assure you, 95% of the tourists on the eastern end of Pedro Clisante do not prefer to hear local music. It will be a cold day in hell before the tourists go up to the DJ at Classicos and request Antony Santos over Rick Ross. I was inside the new "Flame Sports Bar" when the comment was made about not wanting to fly down to the Dominican Republic to hear jazz. The ONLY music I heard in the hour and a half I was inside that bar, speaking with some of the tourists, was AMERICAN music. Not one merengue, not one bachata, and NOT ONE COMPLAINT about the music inside the bar. The only "cultural experience" those Pedro Clisante tourists are seeking has nothing to do with music. You aren't that naive.

Whether Jazz or local music, it was a nice change of pace to have a cultural event on the main street. *It definitely brought out a different crowd and there were a few other side events that entertained along the way. *As for genre of music selected for the festival, I'm not sure why there would be much complaining. * The music was actually few and far between and over by 9pm or so.

It was nice for a change and I'd personally like to see more of it.*

The developers of the AHNVEE project share your sentiments. Those very same sentiments, as well as the experience that you allude to "for potential tourists looking for more than the all inclusive experience", are all a part of what influenced their decision to locate here in Sos?a.

Although the business model is "all-inclusive", their demographic is not what would be considered the typical "all-inclusive" guest. The "typical AI" guest in the Dominican Republic is here more for the budgeted travel package and inclusion of "all you can eat and drink" inexpensively, with emphasis on never leaving the resort property.

As I mentioned earlier, the AHNVEE demographic is ACTIVE adults, seeking a Caribbean vacation including adventure, fine dining and relaxation. Their guests are ENCOURAGED to leave the resort property and experience the unique adventures offered nearby. Even though they are providing exclusive private areas with resort services included on both Sos?a and Cabarete beaches, guests will be enjoying the opportunity to explore the diversity the two towns and nearby areas have to offer, outside the walls of the property.

As far as Sos?a maintaining it's uniqueness, I don't think that will ever be an issue. I'm not sure how long you have been visiting here, but from personal experience (I have been living here for 15 years and visiting for 25) I don't see Sos?a changing enough to lose the qualities that make it attractive. And since many of the positive qualities are associated with its geographical location and setting, e.g., proximity to airport and public transportation, calm safe bay and harbor, numerous beaches, nearby mountains and rivers, etc., it will always remain appealing.

Looks like we agree on a lot. As for your question, I'm only been in the area for a year+.

Sosua is worth defending. It's a great place.

I liked the first part of the last Fri. night, some kids were playing really well, considering their age, and crowd really loved it too. The announcer said it was Contemporary Jazz - whatever that is....

When I'm on Sosua Beach, and a Guitarist approaches, I hear Stairway to Heaven, or House of the Rising Sun.
They know their audience.

When I step off a plane in Cuba, you quickly hear a quartet playing Guantanamera.
They know their audience.

When I step off a plane in Jamaica, you quickly hear Steal Drums.
They know their audience.

What would make people really want to go to Downtown Sosua on a Friday night??
Jazz?? Are you kidding? Who picks this $h1T?

It reminds me, of visiting my Brother, and his pre-teenage son, who proudly shows me his Gaming Cards.
Why? Because in his world, this would ?impress? his friends.

Is someone in Sosua really trying to impress us with ?their sophistication???

Grow up.
You need to pick a music that would help Sosua Businesses, and make wallets (sorry people) come.

This is not... attract the Dominican night.
This is not... lure the AI from Casa Marina night.
This is not... impress my Friends with how sophistication I am.

The audience is mostly retired or semi-retired couples (from other countries).

They want..
-Toe Tapping
-Nostalgia
-dance-able, with a clear beat
-and a show

NOT JAZZ!
