Hello Lindsey,

We did not sell our Casa Veintiuno/21.
We are still open and actually expending.
The new project called Casa 22 will be open mid August 2016 and our Casa 21 is not closed meanwhile.
Best regards, Saskia owner of Casa Veintiuno/21

Not a problem. It was a client of ours who saw this tread and told me about it.
I had to register to DR1 first before I could reply since I was not a member.

I'd like to clear up on what is happening in Sosua.

In 2006 Lionel Fernandez, the president at that time, pasted a by-law stating that alcohol cannot be sold after midnight Sunday-Thursday and after 2am Fridays and Saturdays. This is a national law. It was never really enforced. Yesterday, a copy of the law was passed around to all restaurants and bars in Sosua. Owners were verbally told that the law was now going to be enforced. It seems that those bars such as Las Flores, Rumba, Hermans and Rancho Tipico were closed down this morning because they did not stop selling alcohol at midnight.

So, here's the thing. Tourist areas are excluded from the law and are allowed to sell until 3:30am. What the authorities are doing is illegal and will have to be challenged in court. The authorities have only target Sosua at this point. Cabarete is not affected. However, my sources in Santo Domingo are telling me that this is the start of a National crack down because of the increase in crime, prostitution and drugs and also that the news channels are reporting on it today.

The bright side??? it's low season. It will be interesting to see how long this is enforced.

A question, the Restaurants / bars who were shut down because they did not " honor " the curfew so to speak... are they shut down for a certain
period of time as punishment , or INDEFINITELY, or until they go through the courts ?

just curious

not trying to pour gasoline on any fires. this is upsetting enough as it is.

ju10prd, of course this is just one thing the authorities will try. Will they start arresting the Johns as part of this? Of course they will harass the hookers, they always did. As for the tourist areas being exempt, I suppose they could change that law to fit their agenda as they see fit, or they might lose in court as Seamonkey suggests.

So the tourist areas will be exempt from the crime, prostitution and drugs ??

I can't read sense into this......

Quick google and here is the law

http://www.senado.gob.do/senado/por...s Publicas/PROYDELEYEXPBEBIDASALCOHoLICAS.pdf

Category 1 Establecimientos y Centros Tur?sticos Habilitados y certificados por el Ministerio de Turismo
Horario a ser establecido por el Ministerio de Interior y Polic?a

Those establishments which are certified and have agreed later hours may wish to challenge any early closure.

PS no mention of 2am at weekends in the law link posted???? Maybe later amended.

Thanks for that. Tourist areas have to go along with the hours that the Ministry of Tourism and the Minister of the Interior and Police decide. In other words, whatever hours the government wants to make, they can arbitrarily make. No laws are being broken by telling businesses in tourist areas to close at midnight.

I suspect because of the new policy regarding prostitution, previously certified businesses can challenge all they want without any chance of winning.

Tourism can be killed or improved

This could kill some tourism but it might be OK. Families that come to Sosua or Cabarete might come back if the groups of roaming thug mongers leave for the next Prostitution Paradise.
Most tourists who travel as a family are back at their hotel or villa by midnight. Sooner or later PC has to be cleaned up because the prevalent prostitution has really gone stale

Here is something from 2012 in respect of this law confirming hours including the 2pm at weekends which is what I understood to be the case.

Very stiff penalties too.

No drinking whilst driving which is never applied.

Might be worth asking specifics in legal forum since this is just from a 'Google'.

I know people are grumbling in Sosua now, but the recent precedent is Av Venezuela a major drinking zone in the capital where some large establishments have been closed in recent weeks. Crime, late drinking, drugs, delinquency and prostitution are under the spotlight like never before I suspect. Sosua folks who want their mongering can thank the recent Canadian porno shoot for their spotlight.

I wonder what the Sosua permanent resident retirement/investment crowd wants?

Sosua and Cabarete has potential for serious tourist development but not with this whoring image intact.
