Perhaps.. just maybe.. if they did somehow get ?family tourist? to start
visiting Sosua on a regular basis the tourist would be appalled by the lack
of public services.....and....perhaps if enough of them complained..
they (big government) would finally get off their sorry asses and
do something about it.... or maybe not :cheeky:

A few businesses opening in Sos?a

Despite the exaggerated claims of gloom and doom by some of Pedro Clisante's illustrious business owners, there are other investors actually OPENING businesses here in Sos?a.

Apparently the old Winner's Circle will soon be opened by the new owners.

Across from the Coral Reef Casino, Kalinka Lounge opened several weeks ago.

And just last week a new Italian restaurant opened in the park across from Banco Popular, it is called "Ottimo"

They have an inside dining room and casual seating as well as an outside dining area and pool. Although I haven't eaten there yet, I took some photos this morning as they were just opening up. It looks much nicer in person, they were just opening for the day so I really couldn't take any good pictures.

You take it as doom and gloom. It is more experience over the past 17 years here. I have not seen anything that convinces me that things are changing anymore than what I have heard in the past. All I see and hear is the same things that I have seen and heard over the years I have been travelling here. I have seen so many places open and close over those years I can't even count or remember them. So much has been started, so much has remained unfinished.

Maybe this time is different but please excuse the scepticism. Its become like an echo.

Things are changing. I see it from the top down to the bottom, the population with whom I work. Dr Commuter is right. There are new investments and things happening.

Let us all just sit back and watch. All I want is for Sosua to be successful, no matter how it paints itself. I just wish it well.

You gotta love these people with no skin in the game. lol. "The exaggerated doom and gloom" lol. Open a business down here then watch them ruin the economy. Then we'll see who's exaggerating! Winner circle can reopen under any name or concept it want. It's destined to fail! Just because one place closes and reopens under a new name doesn't guarantee any success. The powers to be are working against the businesses in the are. This is an undeniable fact. Business is hard enough when you have the government behind you. IMPOSSIBLE when they are against you as they are here. No matter what some part timers to Sosua say!

I see no real change from my end, from the people I know. I see more struggle and hopelessness than I have seen in the past. I respect what you do Lindsey and I am glad you see hope in the people you know.

Like I said, I have seen tons of investment over the years, this seems like the same old, same old.....along with a lot less tourists.

My hope is the people get the basics they need to live. This is not currently happening. A prosperous Sosua is what is needed but all I see is a plan with no plan. Like I said....another echo.

And had you been here 37 years ago you would have seen real change. Places change, sometimes for the better.

Only time will tell. As long as it benefits Dominicans of the area and makes their lives better I am all in.

We have another sushi restaurant next to checkpoint which is equally as good but not as pretty.

Sosua is in a difficult postion. It is one of the older tourist destinations in the DR. It is a very seasonal location and it is very difficult for restaurants and bars to stay open year round with little income coming in the low season. It doesn't surprise me that places continuously open and close. Yes it is frustrating to watch local government chase away tourism. In LT for years you had a corrupt mayor diverting funds that should have improved the town. Garbage collection, river cleanup, more police protection, improving infrustructure. These are problems that all towns in the DR have. They are not problems that can't be solved. The problem is unless it is a priority for those at the top of the food chain, than it will never be solved at a local level. Anything that improves these towns and the tourist dollars is good for the DR. As an example, in Samana City, you have an iconic tourist symbol in the foot bridge that connect a number of keys. This structure is decaying and parts are not safe and garbage is left in piles. You would think the local government would make an attempt to fix this? Why they don't baffles me. It should be a no brainer but the powers to be can't put 2 and 2 together and come up with 4. The DR tourism minister should be ashamed of himself for letting many of these project go down the toilet. The bottom line is much of these funds are going into someones pocket and not to improve life in the DR.

Agreed.

A new bar or restaurant anywhere in the world has about a 10% chance of survival after a couple of years.

As someone who reads everything I can find about what is motivating people on the north coast, I have seen much more over the past two or three years about a constant theme regarding this area and Sosua in particular. That theme is what I have called the "war on whores", and a small part of Sosua is the main battlefield.

If anyone doubts that these actions come directly from Santo Domingo and are supported by both the central government and the local governments, including the Ministry of Tourism, I suggest you are incorrect based upon the on going actions in Sosua as proof of this desired change.

All we can do is sit back and watch.

Correct, as you say, the reason is because the formula they use is 2 + 2 < for me
