Yesterday there was a massive power outage in the capital, a massive area of the city was out from Gazcue thru Zona Colonial and into Villa Faro in SD Este, and to the north right up to Villa Consuelo. Started at 11am and went on until 4am this morning. Late last night Edeeste said that it was due to work which was being undertaken in the Colonial Zone, at the junction of Mercedes and Duarte.

And so everyone started to ask how can about a million households be affected by a cable at a single intersection. And then it transpires that's where they are building the new hotel, which is evidently owned by a certain man who happens to run the country. And what is being said is that they connected said hotel into the main grid to avoid going thru the normal supply route, and therefore never having to pay a bill. And they screwed up. A lot of restaurants, bars, clubs had to close yesterday particularly in the Colonial Zone and a lot of people are furious.

I think it's the Occidental. It's 120 bedrooms in Mercedes, they have been building it for years and years.

A million households is a bit of an exaggeration. SD only has 3.5 million people, many of whom live 3-7 people per household.

Other than that, of course they cut power to the schmucks in order to allow the big boys to play ball. What else would you expect?

Not how I'd do things but I'm not running **** around here. That much is for sure.

Ok i thought there were over four million and about a quarter of the city was affected. So about a million people. We can nitpick over quantum's but it was a huge outage affecting a significant proportion of the city

Because they are miles away and are in parts of the city which were built considerably later than the Colonial Zone so clearly would have different electricity supply lines. All of the areas were affected were pretty much the entire city in about 1950.

There are a lot of issues with electricity in Naco and Piantini, as with all services, and with traffic, parking, because they have built way too many apartments there and the infrastructure cannot cope. This isn't Dubai, nobody plans things in advance here.

Don't know if this is related but went to buy ice in Jamao today. Took in my 100 pesos for 2 bags. The owner said, "Sorry, price went up today to 75 pesos per bag. " I said, "Huh?" He replied that no ice trucks delivered today. That every ice factory is "broken down. "

I also read on FB that Sosua and Cabarete people are searching without success for ice.

My problem with the colonial zone is not power it is the water pressure. When I take a shower I like to be pressure washed with hot water. IN the colonial zone water pressure does not exist.

Anywhere you live to get pressurised water, you need a pump and a pressure tank. No water is delivered to the household by the water company under pressure anywhere in DR, not as far as I know. Certainly not anywhere I have lived in the capital.

I must be lucky, the only place I have experienced very low pressure is the colonial zone.

A simple lesson in physics would help you understand that this is possible. Google is your friend
