President Luis Abinader spoke blatantly to the UN Security Council members calling for the funds to quick start the Kenya mission to avert a civil war in Haiti. Kenya has requested US$225 million to fund the mission.

Abinader spoke about how in recent weeks the arrival of paramilitary to Haiti is worsening the civil unrest and control of the gangs in Haiti. He left the UN Security Council members with the ultimatum that if international efforts are not taken, the DR will have to resort to concentrating on protecting itself from the violence controlling Haiti today.

“Today I want to warn the international community that the Dominican Republic will fight with all its might to avoid being dragged into the same abyss as Haiti. Our slogan, from today on, will be: Either we fight together to save Haiti or we will fight alone to protect the Dominican Republic!” said the...

I’m confused. What paramilitary is Abinader referring to in this post? Also funding for the Kenyans is not an issue. The US withdrew funding when the Kenyan Court blocked the initiative. The US put the funding back on the table early January and sweetened the pot with more money. The stumbling block now is the Kenya-Haiti legal agreement required by the Kenyan Court has to be in place before Kenyan police arrive in Haiti.

Maybe Abinader is trying to light a fire under the UN lazy asses and kick start the intervention. Good luck with that!

I like that quote. Lol

As arule of thumb, every Dominican president in every UN Assembly since Haiti has been falling apart says more or less the samething. Year after year the UN does (more accurate doesn’t do) whatever it wants with Haiti regardless of what the Dominican president says.

I’m still wondering why at this point any Dominican president still thinks the world cares about Haiti. Forget the “we fight together to save Haiti” and simply adopt the “we will fight alone to protect the DR.”

If you analyze very closely Dominican history you will notice that Dominicans have been on their own when it comes to creating and protecting the DR starting with its independence. Pedro Santana even sent a letter to the USA asking for its intervention since Haiti was decided to extirpate all Dominicans at the time of independence and it fell on deaf ears! Not the USA and no one else can to help the Dominicans. None!

The world doesn’t care about Haiti and the world doesn’t care about the DR either. Let that sink in.

I don’t know if the world doesn’t care but the UN definitely doesn’t care about Haiti and it’s increasing threat to DR security.

It’s not that the UN doesn’t care. It has done what it knows how to do over many years, and it has been a ton of money down the drain. They don’t really have a clue.
Also, the situation has never been worse. When MINUSTAH first started, they had to clean out the gangs from Cité Soleil. It was a pretty heavy-duty operation. Now, it’s not just Cité Soleil, or even just PAP, but many of the major towns as well. And MINUSTAH was 10,000 soldiers, not 2,000 police.

The UN is going to be between a rock and a hard spot if Kenyan Police intervene. I expect a lot of Haitians to start heading for the DR border to escape the violence between the Kenyans and the Haitian gangs. The DR is not going to allow these people in or feed them. The UN-HCR is going to need to step in and set up a tent city to shelter and feed these people. It’s going to be a circus.

It certainly isn't as simple as flying a couple of plane loads of soldiers there.

Wouldn’t be surprised if the initiative dies because of funding, political, or bureaucratic issues. The longer the wait, the less chance of it happening. Once again, the UN while giving the appearance of wanting to do something, is a behind the scenes stumbling block, with supplementary funding.

Haiti exports reach arround 3 Million $US a Day with a Population of 12 million. Thanks to my 6 years of Study i was able to calculate that this makes arround 25 Cents $US a Head per Day. Zero Income from Tourism or any other major source of revenue. The locals are trying to combate their poverty by mass multiplying. So somebody here explain to me please why anybody with a functioning Brain would spend another $ for this Country ???

Looks like this is turning into a better never than late situation. I would be a total waste of time and money if it happens
I don't understand the relationship between US and Kenya. Also, why Kenya? Why can't Canada help foot the bill since they have been so critical of DR throughout the Haitian ordeal? Now is their chance to be relevant... to contribute something to the global plight besides poutine and maple syrup

To help preserve the sovereignty of the DR perhaps. More need to step up if they want to keep coming back for more all you can eat buffets and all you can drink bar-brand liquor.

Abinader is putting the international community and bleeding hearts on notice.
You are doing nothing for Haiti, or to help DR defend itself from Haitian violence and refugees.

Don't start crying if the DR defends it's borders with force and people die.

The UN is obviously incompetent and needs fundamental reform to be able to have a serious impact.

UN peacekeepers have been a failure.
International forces are put into harms way at crisis locations, with unrealistic rules of engagement.
They are not allowed to intervene when armed forces engage in armed conflict.
They can watch and only defend themselves, a hard fact for soldiers to swallow.

One example is the withdraw of German UN soldiers from Mali, who frequently had to watch attacks on the other side of their camp.
The same went on in Somalia with UN forces.
Often soldiers defending themselves and acting harshly as required, are later on charged with misconduct.
One can only feel sorry for soldiers used as political pawns, paying with their lives for political games.
People dying and they were not allowed to interfere.

The DR has to defend itself from Haitian violence and incursion by all force necessary.

I'd like to see how politicians and bleeding hearts respond faced with daily atrocities committed by warlords and their operatives.
Yes many are teenagers, ready to kill and torture you.

The Haitian criminals and "warlords" are no different than many others African warlords.
Many pawns of international politics and religion.
Somehow people believe to place UN black soldiers in Haiti, will portray a better picture.
At least it won't be caucasians responding to violence.

There is only one way to respond to criminals and warlords in Haiti, that's with absolute force.
The only language they understand.

I can only support Abinader and the DR in securing their country, regardless of international opinions.

There is tourism, although obviously it has diminished a ton since Moise got killed.

Labadee and Jacmel are 2 tourist areas that come to mind. Okap (Cap Haitien) to a lesser degree. The problem with Jacmel is that to access it, you have to go thru Port au Prince, so that scares many potential tourists away. Nonetheless, it's still active for the Haitian diaspora and some black Americans.

Canada is led by a socialist coalition government, which wants to look good internationally and to be relevant.
They as second largest country in the world Canada has no power, money and are also incapable to defend themselves.
The US takes care of this, thank you very much.

Canadian UN peacekeepers have always been victims of politics, as all soldiers are pawns used for politics.
A shame how their citizens are used and often killed.
Competent professional citizens in military forces, who care for their countries.

Black UN African troops look better for military/police intervention in Haiti.
Everyone wants to give the appearance to care.
In reality few care, there are too many international crisis situations, much more grave and important than Haiti.
There is only so much money to be spend in the years of multiple ongoing crosses after covid.

The billions of international aid spend on Haiti have disappeared into the account of corrupt Haitians.
Zero improvement for their people, nothing done by Haitians to take care of themselves.
Whining and blaming colonialism.

What sane person would go on vacation in Haiti?
You may as well go to an all inclusive resort in Afghanistan.

I would go if I was younger, but I would stay north. I'm a white non-native Haitian who speaks good enough Kreyol to get by. If I had my own transportation, I would stop in Ouanaminthe, Ft Liberte, Terrier Rouge, Gran Riviere du Nord, Limonad, Okap, Milot, Galman du Plaa, and Bas Limbe. I've been to all those plus some others.

Now just think if you're part of the Haitian diaspora that knows so much more than me. Good and inexpensive vacation for those not driven by fear.

My issue now is the > 12 hour bus ride from the capital to okap, with 2 or 3 immigration stops and searches. I'm way too old for that BS now.
