Hi everyone,
I will like to shed some light about this subject because I see there is a lot of confusion in this matter. And I must tell you the truth about it, since every normally people are afraid to tell, but I am not.

First of all, prices goes with the number of services at your disposal, so cheap in santo Domingo is not the same as cheap in Tokyo(if anything like cheap exist there!) I must say that if in santo Domingo you pay more than 50 bucks, IS NOT CHEAP!!!

I ask forgiveness to every one who does not like what I say, but people it is the truth at least. Then on to the other matter.

Not all cheap hotels in santo Domingo, ARE HOTELS AT ALL!!!
Please be advice, there are many different flavors about it, and I will explain this to you know;

Pension: The cheapest kind of accommodation there is, but be advice, it is a place with rooms, not restaurant, pool or even warm water in it!!!, is normally better for single people, and offers no recreational facilities at all, but is cheap.

Hostal: This is more like a real hotel, but the main difference is that like the pension, is not for normal tourists since the building is normally old, and not very accommodating the facilities, normally don?t have restaurant, game room or
a bar, but is cheap.

Apart-Hotel: Now here is a LOT of confusion involved!!!, this is not a HOTEL!!!
this are places we you rent a small apartment, and you live there for a price.
That means, you have to prepare your own food, you may have or nor air conditioning o warm water, and NO ROOM SERVICE AT ALL, of cause is obvious, because they are apartments for rent, but sadly, the worst drawback is simple, at 47 US dollars to begin with is not CHEAP at all!!!.

And finally Hotels: you know what they are, so I tell you what you shuold know, First cheap is UNDER 50 USD here!!!, so the only matter is left are the facilites and accomodations, most of them offer telephone in the room, BUT LOCAL CALLS ARE NOT FREE!!! so watch out!, they all shuld have air conditioning, but sadly don?t, please always check out!!, Emergency electric generator is a MUST HAVE, since blackouts ARE comom in Santo Domingo, and is not going to change in the near future eather. Then there is Cable TV or satelite TV(now extint), Game room with pool tables and stuff, consider this if your stay will be more than 3 days on, and shopping stores for woman are basic, but consider your self lucky if they have does, since it is normally a trade of the more Expensive hotels. There is only just one BIG exepcion to all of this hotel in the cheap category, and I will tell it since you should know:
HOTEL CARIBE?O, is the ONLY of them with all of the characteristic that apelling UNDER the 40 buck mark!!, They have FREE LOCAL calls, Air conditioning 24/7 electric energy, Cable TV, Game room and Cold and Warm water, a swimming pool and big department store and the same building!!!, I know what your are thinking, all of this under 40 bucks, that is too good to be true, and yes there is a catch, this is a commercial downtown of santo domingo, avenida Duarte after 7 pm at night is simply dead, so if you are thinking to go out for a walk please think again, this can be bad! but for 35 to 30 bucks the room and all of the above included at least it should be consider and try it. Sorry to all the people that don?t like it, BUT IS THE TRUTH, AND IS CHEAP!!!

Yeah, you also forgot to mention those, : hotel "de pase" aka "Caba?as Turisticas" They are misleading, I thought they are really what the signs say, Then after sometime I realized what "de pase" rate is as really stand for ...........but people really go there for brief sexual ecounters. prostitues, girlfriends, the other woman etc... Some are really high quality and some are low.

La Grand Mansion $20.00 per night...

This hotel is in one of the best areas of SD..It is clean SECURE.[meaning you must leave the key with the front desk when you leave and visitors are checked in and out]..Ceiling fans only .Cable TV ,1 block to av.Independecia.
Address is Calle Danae #26 Gazcue Santo Domingo 809-682-2033..It's a 5 minute walk to Zona Colonial. I have been staying there for years when I need to come to the Capital on Buisness or Pleasure..Only downfall is hot water is available only when you ask for it..And then It's usually at night between 5-9pm..

All Good Stuff

Well, here is what my plans are just for those who may want to know. I am going to SD for 13 days. Normally I stay at the jarragua @ $85 USD plus tax per night. This time, I plan to to it economically. My plan is to stay at the Mecure hotel on El Conde (colonial zone) for $44 for 1 night plus tax. Then the remainder 12 days, I will be staying at the Maison Gautreaux for $30 per night (this does include tax). *** Since I am not sure what I am getting myself into, I do have a reservation for the 12 days at the Maison Gautreaux, but I do have plans to move to another hotel if the accomdations are not good. All in All, I am looking for a Clean, Safe, Quite place to stay at. I know that I am not paying Jarragua rates, therefore I should not expect Jarragua service! - For the money that I pay the jarragua, i decided to do things different since they will not allow guests to come back to the room. I have stayed there several times in the past and i have been lucky enough to "Sneak" people into my room, but I know that security is always watching and I just get tired of it. - I am not sure if this new place (mecure hotel) or (Maison Gautreaux) is going to allow me to bring back (young men) back to my room. If not, looks like the cabannas will be getting my pesos. - If anyone knows of a hotel or rooming house that will allow you to bring back young men back to your room, please let me know. Also - Any thoughts on renting an apartment for the 2 weeks? - If I were to rent an apartment or condo for 2 weeks, hopefully i could be afforded some privacy and not have to worry about someone watching who is coming and going. ** Please Share Your Thoughts.

Mercure

Hi Dakra,
check your bill at the Mercure. They sometimes charge you a higher rate than the one you booked online. Since they make the invoice in pesos and you booked in U$, it's not always obvious when checking out. Guests are allowed in but at an extra price.

Thanks for your comments. That is good advice. As i said, I will only be there for 1 night. I am looking for a place will allow me to bring guests in and out without a fee for each guest. My guests will only be there for a few hours at best. Any ideas?

Dakra,
certainly around El Conde, where Mercure is, your male guests should know solutions to finding rooms for a couple of hours. I wouldn't worry too much about it. There is e.g. a nice looking dominican hotel on Duarte street up from El Conde, nearby the ruins of the San Francisco monastery. I always pass by it when walking up to Av. Mella where I get the latest music CDs at half the price as on El Conde.

WOW!! $130 USD/ per day!!!!!! You must have asked for a suite instead of a regular room. I will be in the Capital City in about a week and will be staying at the Hodelpa-Caribe Colonial for a few days. My rate is $65 USD/night for a regular room.

Well, good luck to you.

It sounds like a good deal for the area ..i don't need a pool or anything like that..I'l be in town on thurs..to meet up with my brother on sat.. so I need a inexspensive place for a day or two.. I'm also bringing my photo gear and want to take some nice shots while I'm there.. I'm from the south bronx.. so not really worried about sketchy areas too much.. I grew up in one..lol..

Try This Hotel and Let me Know

Hey There - I have never heard of this place, but if you try to Maison Gautreaux, they have rooms for $30 USD per night which does include tax! - Sounds to me like a really nice place. I have heard great things about this place and YES, I am planning a 14 day trip to Santo Domingo on the 16th of April and will be staying there for the duration.

Here is the website - Give it a look and if it works out, I certainly hope that you will post a trip report back on this site when you return. Please ensure that if this go good or bad, you let me know. Thanks and good luck

Dakra:

You might check out Camilo House.

Also, Caribe Colonial used to be a great spot to chill with a relaxed, no hassle, no charge policy towards visitors. That is no longer the case and they charge, a hefty sum for overnight vistors. That was instituted because some of the hotel guests were behaving very, very badly.

Aparthotel Pension Serena

This small budget hotel under Swiss management is centrally located in Ciudad Nueva, just a 7 minutes walk from El Conde and the Colonial Zone.
The rent for a studio amounts to appr. 10 USD. It is safe and clean.
