Flor Cafe is very expensive....yes.

Carpenter is past soil guy up the hill....
in a tin shack on the right as you crest the hill.... Chello by name.

He can copy mine... I am very near him.

BTW, soil guy is one who was smashed on the moto last week.
recovering but badly broken.

Oh perfect.. Thanks! I'll take a venture out there this afternoon and see if I can track him down and show a photo for now. If it sounds like he can do the job and at a decent price, I will let you know about copying one of yours. I have used the wood guys in town (close to the new gas station) for a few things but they are often quite pricey.

Oh no.. sad to hear about soil guy. Hope he makes a full recovery!! :(

I'm thinking about downloading the plans and having some made from kaoba. I figure maybe $100/chair?

For 800 pesos, maybe out of pallets?

You can make them so they fold up too. Lots of free designs out there. A good shop can bang those out in about an hour or so, esp if they use a nail gun.

Absolutely NOT made out of pallets, I'd never buy them. These look exactly like the ones in the plans, rounded edges, etc. He even has two different sizes/styles, we bought two of each.

Yes, I was thinking about $100 a chair would be what I would expect/like to pay to have them made.

With all of the great plans available online, my husband could probably even give it a try, but I worry then I won't get them until June as his 'to build' list is getting rather long and my daughters' bunkbeds take priority over chairs for the garden! ;) Having a pro bang them out in a day sounds ideal for just a bit more money.

The thing to do is make templates so they can be made with a table router. The plastic chairs break down in the sun, and I hate those bamboo chairs. I like those new bungie cord chairs in the US for about $30 each and they fold. I might bring down a case of four sometime... Either that or director's chairs.

That would be fantastic... thank you! Yes, the plastic ones actually are quite comfortable.. just a bit flimsy as the sun wears them down (as PeterInBrat mentioned) and not as nice to look at.

It sounds like you got an amazing deal!! Unfortunately I don't particularly want to wait until late December, as we have just built a new shelter in our back garden which is begging to be relaxed in, but if I don't have any luck before then, I will definitely let you know. If your chairs are good quality for that price, you could team up with your guy and make one heck of a business selling them for quadruple that price to other gringos!

Haha, not my style, I'd rather hook gringos up with the guy. They get a great deal and he makes some pesos.

If you do not make them out of termite proof wood they will not last as long as the plastic ones that the sun consumes.

Mine will be on concrete surface rather than on the grass or by bushes/trees so that should help. My house is about half wood (whole roof, all wooden shuttered windows the whole way around) and we have wooden fencing all over our school area so we have a lot of wood to stay on top of termites and don't have issues, so should be okay with re-painting or treating the chairs as needed... but I'll make sure to get decent wood.

WW - No sign of your guy yet but if he doesn't come today, I can happily venture out to find him tomorrow if you think he would be around. I only have a couple of classes in the morning then I am free and can take one of my plastic ones with me plus a photo or two of a wooden one.

He'll get there - today or tomorrow

He works when the power is good - starts early.
He's on a project now.

I'll keep on him

I wonder if making a solution of a couple cups of boric acid in some warm water could be used to make unfinished wood more bug resistant... There's some treatment for bamboo like that.
