As for the helicopters, it's quiet a comment on the sad state of traffic in this city, when people are contemplating a helicopter solution over an ambulance. Nobody in this city pulls over for ambulances!

:D yeah well, no wonder!... WHERE to would one pull over in most cases?
A lane of illegally parked cars lined with another lane of publicos and other turds who just need to unload a "para aqui, eh aqui, eh AQUI!" and three improvised lanes trying to squeeze by that mess on the remaining one line which just HAS to be occupied by some smarties who insist on U-turning to the left just at the "do not turn left"-sign. :tired:

And then, on top of that, just everybody assumes, that that ambulance has only been sent out to pick up pizzas for the office staff again anyways or is just moving the hospital director's "suckretary's" stuff to her new cocoon in Piatini. So why bother? :D

Anyways... besides the fact that air-ambulances exist around the world, they would seem a welcome addition here, especially if you live in a country where the only few really equipped hospitals are spread among only TWO cities. One might not make it in time from Nagua to Santiago or Santo Domingo even in a blazing and surprisingly fueled up ambulance. :(

Something to consider: where will a helicopter land?

This is a difficult place to put on down in most places with the trees, fences, buildings and God knows how many powerlines strewn everywhere.

A victim may need an ambulance to take them to the waiting helicopter...

I believe they are offering the service free for the first month

I would imagine that it would come in useful if you were at a smaller hospital and needed more specialist care that would be offered at a larger one, I dont think people would be expecting the helicopter to land in their garden

Could be.

But from what their site says, it's for emergency use. I suspect a transfer to another hospital would not be covered. I would be surprised if it is.

I'd guess the basic non-depreciated/crewed operating cost of a Jet Ranger is around US$350-400 an hour. Add flight crew, depreciation and a little profit, that cost probably triples.

They ain't cheap.

Some three years ago a Jet Ranger (4+1) was US$650/h and the Long Ranger (6+1) was US$960/h at Helidosa, that was a special price.

Thanks, Not surprised.

Add 3 years of inflation, a trained EMT crew, maybe a flight doc, a bunch of high-tech medical equipment...and it gets very expensive.

FWIW-renting a C172 at a flight school @ STI costs US$175hr.

Landing is no problem, especially if it were in Santo Domingo. After all, 84 motoconchistas, 18 publicos and every car coming on the scene would abandon their vehicles to run over and crowd the victim(s) to get a good look, and their vehicles would stop traffic enough to allow a Huey to land in the street just past the accident.

Dominicans might respect flashing lights and sirens if they were allowed to be used only in case of true emergencies, and only on official emergency vehicles. Instead, ambulances use their lights to go to lunch, senators use lights and sirens to go anywhere, and police always have them on in order to warn the criminals that they are approaching the area. Is it any wonder no one pays attention?

a good point,
if somebody's insurance covers the Heli Transport but not a ambulance, the person may be stuck badly.
but on the other side, of course I can only speak ffor the EastCoast here arround my own home, even with all Fences and Powerlines etc, here a Heli can land a any spot.
along the Hotelstrip every Hotelentrance is wide enough to let such Heli Land, and they can go down right on the Street at most locations,
a few months ago at 2AM even a Chesna with a heavy Drugload came down on the Boulevard a few minutes from here, unloaded their cargo to Pick up Trucks and Jeepetas, and took off again, ha ha ha.
but absolutely right,
for many locations a Ambulance Ride to a Heli Landingsite would be necessary, even a short ride, after a heavy accident mostly a Injured Person could not be loaded on a Motoconcho and be brought to a Medic Chopper nearby.
such services make only sense as a combination of Ambulance and Medic Flight included, and of course in combination of a included Top Hospital, a quick flight would be worth nothing when the Patient is finally entitled to the public Butcher's Hospital in Town.

for an emergency at my own home here I would be very lucky in case of a landing Site, the Pier 30 Meters from my Door is a Helicopter Landing Site, even the armed heavy Choppers of the Marina land and take off here during their sweeps to scan the area every night for Drugboats.

Hey TIDR! There's ALWAYS a "Play" nearby! Choppers do land on baseball fields, EASY.

... J-D.

yeeah,
but even that this country has a lil Baseballfield/Play nearby even on the Campos, there often may be the need to bring a injured from a car crash side etc to that field, we always need the combination of the 3 thingies in case of coverage.
* the medic insurance including good clinics
* the inclusion of the ambulance
* the inclusion of the Chopper
one missing may make the rest worthless.
but in case of landing sites I agree,
plenty around the Isle everywhere.
