This interview is fabulous. As an African American from Philadelphia who has studied this history since learning of Samana and its connection with my city 12 years ago, I am proud! I have visited Samana several times since my first visit and am amazed at how the community there reflects who I am, and yet they are, as the man in the first video suggests, totally Dominican now. And that is as it should be. What Bishop Wright accomplished at the time he resettled black freemen and freewomen to Samana was fantastic! Proud, industrious, intelligent, and hard working. I only wish I could have been one of them.

Some years ago I took my family to see el Salto de Limon. Once there, I was surprised to be greeted by English speaking natives. It happened that the family that operated the horseback tour to el Salto was descendant of African-Philadelphia-American freed slaves as portrayed in the video. Their history along with their surname was displayed on a wall in a small tourist hut at ground level. I forget the English-American surnames, but none that were mentioned in the video rang a bell. I have the event and surname recorded somewhere but a quick search through my picture/video archives was fruitless. More importantly, meeting the family and learning the history was value-added to the visit to el Salto.

Thanks for this, Viajero. I was familiar with a similar history in Lim?n, Costa Rica but I had no idea about this.

hello, everyone, i am not sure if this is that informative but, its nice to know I guess. Did you know there are African American settlements in almost every country and continent around the world? Maybe even a lot more just African settlements. But thanks for sharing, guess it is Dominican related? Take care, God bless
