A couple of friends and I all 20 something are here studying abroad for a semester. Tomorrow we are throwing a birthday party and want to go to a dance club where they play a nice mix of american music.

Does any one have a clue as to where we could find a decent variety of current rap, hip hop top 40 in the capital? Or which different clubs for different days. The party is tomorrow (friday) I have been going to different places trying to find a nice mix that would be fun for those in the group who dont know how to dance salsa, merengue or bachata.

Thanks in advance,
RD

Thanks for response, but do you know something that I could go by personally. The information in the websites like bonche.com and there are a couple of other ones, are nothing like what they advertise.

I was hoping for a particular club or clubs that someone can vouch for.

Thank you

Which program are you studying abroad with?? I studied abroad with CIEE last year in the capital. If you're looking for a club that exclusively plays hip hop and american music all night long--good luck! It's really hard to come by. Most clubs play an american song here and there--but unfortunately you will find that the songs are pop songs from about a decade ago. And the majority of the hip hop they play isn't even danceable.

But on that note you came to the DR to study abroad--don't worry about those that can't dance meregue, bachata, or sala--they will learn--they will HAVE to learn. Anyway good luck.

I didn't know there was a such genre

As American Dance music...

As far as I know Europe dominates that scene by a hefty margin.

I know what you are talking about though and I hate to nit-pick, but I just hate to give fuel to those who claim we Americans think we are the center of the universe. (even if we are)

Also I sympathise with the need to get away from the standard selection of local music.

Just give a little credit where credit is due, do a little research and I am sure you sill find that more than half of your favorite artists/bands/DJ's etc. are Brits, Canadians, Aussies and otherwise not standard gringos.

I posted a similiar question today...in a different way I guess.lol From what Exxtol is saying there isnt much up to date hip hop goin on in the clubs there. Playing old songs? man thats sick. I guess all teh young domincans there must be gettin all their music off the net or having their cousins in the US send it to them. Is that because there is little interest? the Dominicans I know love Hip Hop and Raggaeton why wouldnt it be getting any play there? I am a DJ living in Miami Beach and Im interested in spinning down there myself. Not every night or anything but maybe once or twice a month. Do you think that would be worth getting into?

Hip hop all nite

Head to Fusion Rose in the Colonial Zone, they play hip hop only most of the time with a little reggeaton to mix things up. The crowd is usually American students on study abroad programs, Dominicans on vacation from the states, and locals. Good times. Right on La calle El Conde between the Plaza de Colon and the French Embassy.

You can dance to American and European House and Techno at Abacus in the Colonial Zone, but you won't hear Hip Hop there.
This is true for most clubs in the Colonial Zone. Many play house, techno, and rock... Not Hip Hop. Maybe there is one that plays Hip Hop that I don't know about?????

These hip hop " ganstas" , " thughs" have referred to my music merengue as " circus music". Certainly they wouldn't have the balls to say that in public in Wash Heights or DR.

Only ignorant people judge others based on the comments or actions of a few. if you mean "thugs" well thats what they are thugs. thugs/gangsters in any culture/country say foolish things because they are operating on an uninformed and ignorant basis. Maybe its just the former music major in me. But I appreciate all forms of music. What i dont particularly care to hear i dont dismiss as being "bad music" i dont like country nor would i play it in my home but that doesnt make it bad.I am from NY and have been to the Heights and no I wouldnt say anything about it even if I didnt like Merengue. Thats like going to the Superbowl and you dont liek football. But anyway...you shouldnt make ignorant comments just because a segment of people that like Hip hop made ignorant comments about music you like then come in someone else's post and run off at the cakehole!.

The ratio of disrespect fromhip hop fans to the ones that respect other people's music, is 3:4. These people think that " hip hop" is the best s%#@& on Earth, the center of the universe and everything else is " thrash".

If I say hip hop is garbage, is not merely of all the disrespects towards other people's music, but by all the garbage in the lyrics from thugs like " 50 cent, the game" etc, that are worshipped like if they were gods. Praising violence, misogyny, saying the " n-word" here and there" and all kinds of anti-social behavior". This garbage is a virus, a menace to society.

I'd like to read your study on hip hop--was it published by the Library of Congress?--as you seem to be an expert on this subject.

Get some hard based facts--you've left out so many positive rap artists i don't even know where to begin--Immortal Tecnique, Blackalicious, even more mainstream artists like Common, The Roots, and Brand Nubians.

Don't let MTV and BET (pop America) dictate to you what hip hop is--besides your'e speaking of hip pop.

How do I know? I've lived for years surrounded by that thrash. hip pop, hip hop, s*^#t pop, whatever you call it. The evil side of it. I've seen the transformation people get when becoming fans of this thrash. Dressing like clowns, disrespecting decent people for no reason, thinking they " own" the street. It is a pitty that many Dominican youth in States are falling victims to this " s(%#@ pop culture". The time they give more " priority" to this garbage than the native merengue and bachata,is when they are not Dominicans anymore. Go ask Bill Cosby, Jesse Jackson, or just any other old timer, doesn't have to be a famous character like these men to point it out. What they think of " hip pop" and the " n-word, the bee itch word" all over the lyrics.

Merengue has some songs with machismo intonations, but i've never heard of " maldita puta" ( f@#% bee itch), just yet. and I've been listening to merengue ever since I came to understand speech as a toddler.
