Does anyone know where I can buy anchovies in the capital? I asked our local Italian pizza guy and he imports them from Italy. Our local Ole doesn't carry them and I've never seen them in Jumbo at MegaCentro. I know they're not that popular but I really like them on salads. Thanks!!

I bet you could find them at a Nacional supermarket. Perhaps the one on Ortega y Gasset or the one on Nuñez de Caceres.

I have bought them on various occasions at Jumbo. Are you sure you're looking in the right place? They are usually in the area in front of the deli.

Next time you visit Megacentro go a little bit down of Av.San Vicente to Supermercado Bravo, they have small cans of Anchoafilets from Brand Roland.
I'd used them for my homemade pizza every time.

Since we are on the subject of anchovies...
I've tried various different anchovy pastes out there but, have not been particularly impressed.
I'd like to buy them packed in oil, in one of those little itty bitty cans but would never use the whole can.
Has anybody had a positive experience freezing the leftovers?

I put them in a small plasticbox with lid in there own oil and store them in the refigerator, they last there up to 2 weeks.

Yes, I don't use all of an itty bitty can when I make a pizza for just me so I freeze them in the opened can with their oil and they are great when defrosted.

In the can?
Yikes.
It reminds me of my dear departed mom.
She used to say...I'll drink a a beer from a bottle but, I draw the line at cans.
Anyways, it's good to know that they do freeze well.
Maybe I'll upgrade my next Caesar salad with some of the little guys.
Smash them up real good and you'll never know they're there.
Yum.

I hope to go to Jumbo this coming Thursday. I'm going to check there and ask. I've only looked where the sardines are and never found them. JD said the deli section so I'll go there and if I can work up the courage to embarrass myself, I'll ask an employee.

In Santo Domingo este (in Alma Rosa 1) there is a small Italian deli. I believe the name of it is Anconda. I have their card back at my house in JD but I am in the states now. When I get back in about a week I'll double check it. They serve a great espresso with small pieces of Italian bread topped with olive oil. They probably have it there as I saw every other type of delicacy there just two weeks ago.

I went by Alma Rosa on the way to Mega Centro yesterday. Now for the sad story on anchoas.

I asked in my horrible Spanish while I was at Jumbo where the anchoas were. The first guy didn't know what they were, so the only thing I could think of was pequeno pescados pero no son sardinas. Then, we got somebody else who led me directly to them in the olives sections. But...it said anchoas in big bright letters. Only when I got home did I realize it was green olives stuffed with anchovies.:eek:The olives overpower the anchovies and you can't taste anything. Johne, I looked for Anaconda in Alma Rosa 1 and couldn't find it on Google maps.

I went to Jumbo Luperon as well, and everybody knew what they were and the company (Roland's) but they were surprised to discover they didn't have any.
If I were thinking better, I would have gone up the street to Sirena, but it didn't occur to me until I was almost home.
I suspect they will restock soon as I have always been able to buy them there. Better luck next time, I guess.
