Both things true. However, when you do kill a Toyota parts are expensive. The ones you can get at the colmado are no good, only good for conchos. OEM Toyota parts are as expensive as those of any european car, trust me on that.

i know..but the salvage yards always have some decent stuff around. it would be easier to get a used steering column for a Corolla than for a 325I.
