sjh, my wife and i own a freshwater shrimp farm "outside of Nagua". As a matter of fact there are 6 of us and counting in ########. Only one is fish/shrimp. There is little profit in rasing fish due to high feed cost and length of time to raise fish. Also one or two, 1 Acre ponds is not enough. We have 13 1 acre ponds at present and when the weather clears up we will add 8 more to this project. You can expect to get 800 to 1,200 Lbs fo shrimp per pond, every 4 months 3 times a year. At $150.00 pesos per pound... you do the math. There are few drawbacks or headaches if any. Very Very low manitance/labor costs. You just have to know what you are doing and have patience. We are able to make a good living and live the dream of a lifetime! Speaking for myself (some people here tend to find doubt/fault with anything) We have found this bussiness to be the most profitable around in the DR.
For Erick, the project at Bayaguana was purchased last year and after a rocky start is up and running.
As for cage culture, i have heard of none here. But anything is possible here!
If anyone wants info please e-mail me. hjvkm@yahoo.com

Blanca,

I am a dairy farmer in Cabrera. I am sure we know a few of the same people. I have stopped in to visit one of the shrimp farms a while back. While I have no interest in fish as a commercial venture, I do raise some fish in my reserve water tanks.

I would like to see your farm sometime. send me a pm or something.

Stephen

Visited Cotui yesterday and when on the Presa Roadway, If you look below the Dam, you'll see something going on. My friend who lives locally, told me that its a fishfarm, run by some French investors. Not too sure of the facts but it looked substantial. Maybe a hatchery? does anybody know what it is?
