This is what I think happened having read the news reports in English and Spanish.
1. There is no question the lady was severely beaten. Interestingly it was her face which was beaten and not her head. No skull fracture and no brain damage – even temporary TBI. That to me shows someone wanted to disfigure her and not to kill her.
2. She was strangled several times she says, but again, not enough to kill her.
3. I understand her not remembering many details about her killer, apart from the fact he was brown, and had a hotel uniform on. That rules out Haitians (in the main) and the police investigated all hotel employees and none had the bite or scratches she said he inflicted. Only other option is that someone came in off the beach, and assuming she is right re uniform, they stole one.
4. Dominicans, in my experience, do not inflict mindless violence for no reason. This was not a robbery, her bag and phone were not taken, not an intended murder or he would have killed her. Maybe a Venezuelan? I know they are capable of more violence, if only from my own experience.
5. She works for an insurance company. The USA is a litigious society. The DR is not. I think, she went home, started negotiations with the insurers of the hotel – as reported in the press – they didn’t offer enough money, and after three months they said, that is it, it wasn’t our employee, end of story. She then said, you will regret this and went public.
6. I don’t think she will get money out of this, apart from money from the press and TV for her public appearances, but I do not think she reported the crime 5 months later to protect other women. I am very sorry about what happened to her – but going public I cannot see will do her any good as who knows what might come out of the woodwork.

Thank You Matilda, makes a WHOLE lot of sense to me.

@flyinroom post #520 ,,,,,,,, also makes sense to me .......

........

***********

In the cold, cruel light of day,
seriously injured and suffering from a massive hangover,
vacation ruined and medical bills adding up...
The accuser along with her husband may have conspired to try and make the best of a bad situation.
They may have thought that their accusations would be bought hook, line and sinker.
Failing that,
They went the route off the oft used and rarely successful...Pay me back for my vacation expenses or else.
When that also failed they seem to have attempted some sort of litigation that has also failed.
They appear to be frustrated that nothing is working.
Last chance may be a Go Fund Me account and that may be what the "go public" stage is meant to accomplish.

you laptop cops are really getting good at what you do ............ LOL, peace

How so? You guys blaming the husband (as well as the woman) have an agenda.

actually, i see nobody here blaming anybody. there is a big difference between believing that there is a likelihood that the husband could be the culprit, and blaming the husband...nuance, nuance.

I bet it was a dennuncia at best.

That's what it sounds like to me, too, and there should be a record of that. In order to file a querella, one would first have to retain a lawyer, no? And what tourist is going to do that considering the condition she was in and the time and expense involved?

Very plausible, I struggle with some random guy coming off the beach and stealing a resort uniform to just beat her.

How come the woman could not file a criminal complaint from the hospital with assistance from the police? Why did they have to go to a courthouse in Higuey? Why does one need a lawyer for a criminal complaint?

That is the only part I also have a problem with. Just seems to me this was a person who knew her and had a beef with her or was just outright mad/angry with her. Just doesn't seem like something a stranger would do just because.

fly's scenario is interesting, but those injuries are not consistent with a fall down the stairs, even head first.

Rounding a corner or going down some stairs or at some other point she slipped, lost control and fell headfirst into an immovable object.

Perhaps I should chosen my words more carefully and indicated a fall "face first" into an immovable object.
Be that as it may, I stand by my suspicion that her injuries may have come about as a result of a combination of events.
First some rough stuff at the hands of her husband and second, the more serious, as a result of an accidental occurrence.

One does not need a lawyer for a criminal complaint. The fiscal came to my house when I was attacked and took my statement. No lawyer present. Then I had to go to her office in Santiago Rodriguez to see the medical examiner and do my complaint again where is was typed up. Fiscals do not travel with laptops and printers. This is only 2019 remember. Once typed up and printed I signed it and was given a copy on the spot. Cost zero. Lawyer zero.

3. No description of the perp. She never mentioned Brown or Blue or Purple.
4. All people from any nationality can inflict mindless violence. It isn't mindless to a perp, but to mindless to normal people.
A random man from VZ off of the beach to be able to steal a uniform.....and to know where a crawlspace is? Unlikely.

She did say he was brown in one of her early statements. And yes I know anyone can inflict mindless violence, I just cannot think of one case in my 19 years here where someone has inflicted mindless violence without it being domestic abuse or a robbery or a settling of accounts.

One does NOT need a lawyer for a criminal complaint within RD.

OK I never saw that. A lot of violence never gets reported. This has attention because it happened at a resort.

Violence or perceived violence against tourists almost always gets reported. Violence against Dominicans rarely does.
Just last week, a young woman was found dead in a field in Veron. She had been stabbed 24 times. The People tabloid magazine did not grant an interview to her family.

Yes, I guess it is. The price has dropped from 300 and something to 100 and something a night. I forget the exact amounts. It should be safer than ever right now................
