Oh brother... Master's degree isn't meaningless. It's so frustrating when someone posts such a stupid response to meaningful posts. Just stay out of this post if you don't have anything productive to say.

Just keep hanging out with your, so called, educated click. You will soon be the wiser.

And this is my opinion which I value as productive. You can't just take the good. The bad goes hand in hand.

Again, lala land.

And I am not your brother, that is an insult to me. Thank you anyway.

Over and out. Oh wait a second, I only have a Bachelor's degree so we cant hang anyway.:glasses:

Means nothing, nada, zilch!!!

Lawyers, doctors, etc. are some of the most worthless beings put on this earth.

Not all, but a few.

And you only have a "Master's" which nowadays is meaningless.

You live in lala land sir!!!!!:surprised:surprised

It's not meaningless. There's nothing more potent than an educated mind.
I'm a lawyer, as are many of my friends. I know more than a few health care professionals. The vast majority are good, decent hardworking folks, and your description of them is both wrong and wrongheaded.

I have yet to demean folks in, say, the airline business despite near-universal fair to poor service, so it would be appreciated if you didn't resort to generalizing.

He's a young man trying to do something different and interesting with his life. Why berate him? YOU certainly didn't mind bragging about your exploits when you first came on this board, after all.

There's nothing more ironic than a guy from the Bronx demeaning an entire group of people that he knows little to anything about.

Oh brother is an expression. Based on your responses I won't ever respond to anything you have to say. You are for lack of a better word.. ghetto.

DROB, again spoken brilliantly. I can tell just by the way you communicate that we would have a lot in common. It is clear that your posts are based on sound analysis of the issue at hand. You are a great example as to why I choose to surround myself with innovative people that are able to think outside the box.

Hey Shawn, Whatever anybody says, including myself, it's your time in life and it's for you to experience what's out there. I have met a lot of professional people here that aren't worth wasting one minutes time with, but on the other hand 3 of my very best friends are 2 dentists and a retired heart surgeon. They have helped me in so many ways and at the beginning they made it possible for me to survive here. No matter what everybody posts here you will have to learn on your own. The only bit of advice I can give you is pick your friends wisely or you will get burned.
By the way, congrats on obtaining a Masters degree.....

You are for lack of a better word.. ghetto.

Grew up in the ghetto. Yes, I still think I am a bit so and I proud of it. I know where my roots came from and proudly go back to them. I do not live there anymore and my life is full of many educated minds. As a matter of fact, I am pursuing a few certifications as we speak. But I do not have to list my resume for a whole bunch of strangers. I know where I stand.

To say that I only socialize with people of my own caliber because I have a master's degree is bs.

DRob, you are right. An educated mind is a great thing to have. But this guy Shawn lives in lala land and he will soon find out.

You two make a great pair. Enjoy each other.

As far as ghetto, dont knock it until you have been there.

That's it. This thread has gone haywire and I am out.

Shawn, good luck to you and all your goals.

I am not hating just being honest. I know many people who have master's degrees who are living from unemployment check to unemployment check and now find themselves in the ghetto.

Later gators.

Thanks. And believe me I know that just because someone is educated doesn't mean that they are automatically a good person. I think that's what people are thinking I mean. I'm not trying to throw my degrees out there just giving people insight as to how I think about things.

From my own personal experiences, educated people just know how to burn you better without the use of a gun, doesn't mean they are better. Be careful here and watch your back, and watch your money closer. You have to experience your life yourself.

I knew there was something fishy about you Rob, but now you tell me you are a lawyer. That explains it all.

Its sad when go-go dancers or strippers in niteclubs and caberetes can make way much more money than doctors, lawyers, professors, and a good number of businessmen or businesswomen in the DR. These girls make up to RD$100,000 pesos and up. My friend has a house in santiago and one of his neighbors niece works in one of those places. I saw her never talked to her but her uncle said this girl makes alot of money alot times more than some business people over there. This guy says his niece considers herself " un machita de mujer" and don't take crap from no one and never aks anybody for money or anything dresses well and has a vehicle and nice apartment according to her tio. According to the tio she doesn't even go out with patrons you know pay for play activities only dances and flirts around and collect the money yet she didn't even attend college. I was like wow unbelievable but thats life!!!

I never said they were better. They're simply not any worse, either.

Thanks Africaida, I needed that! I'm going to look for apartment when I'm there for labor day weekend. Would be great to actually see what everyone looked like on here!

I couldn't agree more....actually, I enjoy talking to educated people a lot more,
they know how to......

While it's true that more educated people can usually verbalize/communicate better due to a larger knowledge base but they are not necessarily more enjoyable to talk to or listen to. I know a number of people well educated in the University of Life that have no degrees but have a PHD in life experiences and have the ability to impart that knowledge. I work with a lot of people with master degrees in Aerospace technology, mechanical engineering, computer engineering, ....etc. Give them a math or physics problem and they'll solve it for you but don't expect them to be able to communicate in normal everyday conversation. I'm obviously exaggerating but you get the picture. I know for example more geography that most university educated people, probably because I've been more places than most people and that combined to have no TV as a kid forced me to read all those national Geographic magazines.
Anyways Shawn congratulations on achieving your Masters, as it is an earned and not given accomplishment.

Where is he? I've been waiting for his input.

And Shawn, I'd recommend in your situation having an exit fund or some exit strategy in case you need to leave the country quickly. More than anything, for health reasons.

I was in your place once, and lived in Mexico. Being young, I thought I could do anything, and even worse, eat anything. I got food poisoning from one of those sidewalk vendors who had the best smelling food ever. It was not the run of the mill food poisoning that I've had a few times: it was blood coming out both ends food poisoning. (Sorry for the details.) I was fortunate that I had a good support system who nursed me back to health.

In your case, being here more or less alone, what would happen should you get dengue or malaria? Who can you call to help you get out of jail if you are in a car accident? (The police can take you into custody until they determine who is at fault.) What happens if the Dominican goddess you met at the bar has an over-protective father?

I don't want to frighten you, and I wish you well. As I said, I did the same thing at your age and have never regretted it once. My perspective on the world grew so incredibly from that experience, more than I got from either of my two master's degrees.

And I appreciate that you are doing your research, including here at DR1. I gleaned lots of good info from this site before making the move to the DR.

Good luck however!
