Squat's yanking our chains, like Robert and his Mac...
Traditionally, I am the "Linux Taliban" of this board ;)
I particularly enjoy exposing some Free Software advantage whenever Rocky does a thread about how to make Vista work a bit :)

So here's the deal, go there: Download Ubuntu | Ubuntu
Then download your copy of Linux. Burn it to a CD, install it on your hard drive, and forget that you ever need an antivirus !!!

If you need a tutorial, here's one right there: The Perfect Desktop - Ubuntu 8.04 LTS (Hardy Heron) | HowtoForge - Linux Howtos and Tutorials

Enjoy !

Would you comment on Bit Defender - as compared to AVG or Alvira, etc.

And also what are you giving up or exposing when you have a 'free' version other than the automation part?

Thanks
Ro

I'm sure that Bit Defender is OK, but why bother, when you have the 2 best options in AVG and Alvira.
AVG 8 for the most comprehensive job, (does spyware and virus) Alvira for weaker puters. (does virus only)
If one doesn't mind losing a touch of speed, one can still use the AVG 8 to have the maximum protection.
The free version, IMHO, is the better programme to have.
When you have automated programmes, they run in the background, constantly stealing resources and may even go into action at an inconvenient time, when you need all your PC's power for a special project.

Thanks for that.

Now what's the difference between Alvira and Avista or are they the same and I'm just making a spelling error?

In the USA, 50% of computers over US$1000 sold for personal or home use are Macs. 1 in 3 laptops sold are Macs.

Once you go Mac you never go back. Millions of people have gone from PC to Mac, find me just one person that has gone in the other direction ;)

Sorry for hijacking the thread, but I can't help myself. hehehehe!

Yes, we have a couple of PC's in our office and yes they are the only ones that have any sort of virus or spyware protection and they are also the only machines that give us problems. Lucky with have AVG on them :)

The Challenge

Ubuntu shmuntu, Macashmack, and all the rest.
Hold onto your socks.
Get ready for the Humpty Dumpty experience.
Seeing's believing and this clip speaks louder than words.

The clip is called, "Beat this".
The 666 devil is here.
$666 is the total investment here.
$616 US for a Dell puter, dual core 2.0, 2 gigs of ram. 7,200 rpm hard drive. $50 US for an additional 2 gigs of ram from Crucial, delivered to my friend's door in NYC. (He brought it down for me)

So.........................
Let's see the Mac boys and all the PC guys with their fancy shmancy operating systems, INCLUDING XP, beat the performance.
I bet their $2,000 machines can't do it.
They'd be all jammed up, if not crashed, halfway through opening all those programs.
Some of them would get choked up, trying to open that HP photo program, at the same time as Google Earth.

It's time to separate the little boys from the men.
I don't want to hear excuses or sad sob stories.
Do the challenge.
Give us a clip of your puter, doing what this one just did in the above clip.

Silence is golden

For all the Vista naysayers and non believers, here's the hardware info on the puter that made that clip.

PCinfo.jpg

In this day and age, my puter would be classified an average puter.
A 2.0 processor is certainly not the top of the line, and 7,200 rpm hard drives are just about standard now, and the 2 gigs of ram it came with is what you need for good performance, as 1 gig would lack that "ooomf" one needs for multi tasking, and as for the additional 2 gigs I bought after, it was mainly because it was so cheap.
You can't feel or see any difference, except when multi tasking a bunch of things at the same time.
Even the "Windows Experience Index" score is average.
A 3.0 score is about halfway between the lowest and the best.

So, if an average modern puter with Vista can perform as seen in the clip, then what would be the use of all those other operating systems?
You have to relearn everything.
Some have program compatibility issues.
And even if they aren't prone to virus', (because nobody bothers making virus' for them. Too inconsequential, I guess) the fact is that the clip was made with the AVG 8 running in the background, so this Vista puter is as protected as a Mac or a PC with Ubuntu, and it still kicks butt.

C'mon now. Show us what ya got.

The video clip was impressive. Not quite "Cars", "Chasing Nemo" or Pixar quality. Then again, all those are made on Mac's, just like most movies you see now days :)

If only it was about how many applications you could simultaneously open, then we would all be on Linux boxes :)

Marco, you don't use Macs, you might play with one, once every few months.
Your comments are not based on extensive use of both operating systems.

It's about the user experience, productivity, reliability and the ease of use.
Find me one person that has switched from Mac to PC, you can't.

I have PC's and Mac's, I use them heavily every day, have done for years. By the end of this month we will be 100% Mac and everyone in the office will be cheering and very happy!

Keep it coming, I can do this all day ;)

Too funny

Y'all are cracking me up.

Not quite "Cars", "Chasing Nemo" or Pixar quality
???

C'mon now.
That was a 300+ meg clip that I downsized to 7 megs so that y'all could download it quickly.
I wasn't trying to show you graphics.
I was showing you what real power is and how little it costs.
And of course, it's all about power.
There ain't nothing as frustrating as sitting around waiting on programs to function/open.

And Sky..
Is that the Ubuntu solution?
To badmouth AVG?
Hey, you can write all the good or bad reviews on the net, but it won't change anything for me, as I have tested, retested, sampled, and maintained 5 public PCs that go through more abuse in a week than a home puter goes through in a lifetime.
I've seen it all, from accidental to deliberate sabotage.
I've tried a dozen anti virus programs on our puters, put them through real life tests and I've touched 500+ laptops along the way, and I've seen what works and what doesn't.
I'm far from being an actual PC expert or guru, but when it comes to finding efficient programs and stopping those things that slow down PCs, I doubt that anyone around here does it better.
I'm throwing down the glove.
This is the Vista challenge.
Let me see someone with a similarly priced puter with any OS on it, that can beat the performance, illustrated in that clip.

Get to work, boys.
You got a big challenge ahead of you.

I confess, I luved AVGfree in previous versions but find that the newest AVG8 is slowing me down. :(

When I was using AVG8 I found my laptop to be somewhat slower than with previous versions. I thought of other potential issues but could not find any when I investigated.

Just a few minutes ago I uninstalled AVG8 and now have Avira running. It is actually doing a full scan as I type this and my laptop is a lot faster feeling than when I had AVG8 installed and just "idle"....and my machine is pretty fast :D...but it is a laptop and therefore has limitations that a desktop may not.

All I can suggest is that you try the various options out on your computer and see what is best for you.

100% correct.

I switched all my public puters to Avira, as the AVG 8 was just a bit too heavy for them.

Try as I could, I couldn't detect any slowdown on the Vista puter with AVG 8, so I went with it for the additional spyware protection.

You've seen the stats on my laptop and know how fast is is but your Vista desktop has double the ram of my laptop and that makes a huge difference.

I found AVG to be great but once I noticed that my machine was slower I had to do something about it.

Since you have done all the dirty work, testing various programs, it was a no brainer for me to try Avira, since you recommended it. :D

Thanks!!!
