I am looking to go to Santo Domingo and other parts of DR in July.

I like emersing myself in local life as much as possible so I generally dont stay at the big hotels.

However because this is my first trip, I dont know what smaller hotels are good or bad to stay in.

I will not be making reservations in advance, as I can get a better deal usually by just showing up.

What I want to do though is avoid hotels that are not safe, not quiet, not allowing illegal enterprises.

Since I can choose the good ones for myself when I arrive, I just need to eliminate ones that I absolutely want to avoid.

Can anyone give opinions about which hotels may not be on the up and up or may not be safe or quiet to stay in?

I was referring to hotels that may have a problem with providing or allowing illegal activities, ie, drugs, sex, etc.

I know that there are probably no hotels that actively partake in these activities, but as with any other country, there are hotels that allow this to happen.

I think I miswrote that part, I am trying to avoid hotels like that.

I am fairly sure sex is still legal in most provinces in this country.

Okay, people are gettin annoying.

"Sex" meant prostitution, and I know someone here is going to say that it is legal.

This is true, but my point was I am looking to avoid hotels that are known for their frequent visitors, male or female, even to the point where they hang out in front of the hotel.

It was really a simple request.

It is just the way you are posting the question.

Tambo is saying that sex is legal as opposed to your comment saying it was illegal.

There might be a few posters that can guide you the right direction.;)

Sex and prostitution are not synonymous where I come from , you could have been a little more specific with your inquiry. Perhaps you can use a taste to help you adjust your attitude a bit.

Try the SDQ Hilton if you need to be sheltered from society. If you need a beach try Capella resort in Juan Dolio or Hamaca in Boca Chica. Good luck.

I have seen with my own eyes only one small hotel on Calle Independencia where prostitutes aggressively "cruise" the entrance for clients, but that came to a grinding halt after repeated complaints.

I seriously doubt you can find any hotel where prostitution doesn't go on in at one point or another-what you may need to consider is the amount of discretion involved.

Certainly not any large hotel with casinos-thats' usually where I see prostitutes cruising for clients.

Sofitel Frances maybe? Someone correct me if I have the name wrong...

Don't think that at the big AIs that stuff doesn't go on, because it does...many times with the hotel workers themselves...

Thanks for you info and reply, I agree that it really matters to what degree, and that becomes subjective, I think what I most want is that it isnt completely obvious, if that makes sense.

i dont know of any specific hotels to avoid but if you're looking for somewhere safe and clean that does not have any of the shady issues described above, check out the Coco Boutique Hotel About in the zona colonial.

I believe that I understand what you are saying, although I have no recommendations for you as I live on the North coast.
In short, you would like to stay at a relatively low budget hotel, but not at the cost of ethics.
Some place that is low priced because it's not fancy, but it's secure and they don't allow the riffraff in to bother clients.
You would like to be comfy there and shielded from vendors, beggars, prostitutes, etc.
Is that more or less it?
If so, then some of the South coast members will surely have some good suggestions for you.

I don't believe a list of bad hotels exists on this board but here is a link to a very good list of safe hotels in Santo Domingo.

Also here is a link of things to do and places to go in Santo Domingo.

Rocky you are correct,

My hope in listing the bad hotels as opposed to the good ones is that I can get into town, get my bearings and see what is good that meets my needs.

I find though that many people on here give great advice on good hotels, but there are also people on here that actually own or are friends with people that own hotels so it is more an advertisement, which isnt necessarily bad, but I think listing the bad hotels will give me a better perspective.

I doubt that you will get a bad list andf it could even be libelous to do so.

You would think...

that a hotel with conference rooms, pool, and casino might want to be a little more specific about where they are located. Not one word on the website (at least I could not find an address) other than minutes from Las Americas and downtown Santo Domingo. That narrows it right down!

I just returned from my first trip to SD, and i stayed at Aurora del sol, and it was great. Aurora del sol Hotel & Casino | 809.483.3313

i also got a great deal on my room...
55 per night!!

the pool is a huge + too!

At the swankier hotels you have "respectable" businessmen, both foreign and native, going out on a night on the town and bringing back their "dates" for the evening.

If a certain hotel has a "no guest" policy, all the man has to do is pay the nightly rate for the woman and she is in and the hotel more than likely will not deny her entry.

Also, there are many very elegant-looking women out there turning tricks-so how is the hotel staff supposed to tell the difference?

What I am saying is that this type of activity is everywhere and you cannot avoid it. And there aren't any hotels that promote prostitution, so I am at a loss as to what you are looking for and what you are trying to avoid.

Will it upset you if you see a middle-aged gringo hanging out at the pool with a young, pretty dominicana? Or a group of businessmen with a flock of pretty chicas around them in the hotel lobby?

If you use this as criteria for badmouthing a hotel, then I got news for you-they are ALL bad because the odds of you not seeing something like that is zero.
