Banana question

Anybody hear of a banana called "rumba"? (or something close to that)
I had something today that looked like a banana, but more squarish and a bit "tougher" on the inside. Very sweet though, much sweeter than a regular banana. I was told it is called rumba.
I can't find anything out on the web, I must have its name wrong.
Anybody know what I am talking about?

dominicans cook it normally and my gardener was so surprised when I did not allow him to collect them row and more surprised while tasted it in yellow mode.

In January a friend's brother from Haina spent a few days rewiring our house and upgrading our electrical box. He gave us a handful of the most amazingly sweet little bananas we ever tasted. Very small. They were called Manzana Bananas. We loved them so much that he gave us a small tree that we planted on our property. My mother-in-law just told us that there is a huge bunch of bananas on it right now, wish we were there to enjoy them!!

As far as the rulos, I'm not crazy about them when green, and had NO idea that they could be eaten raw when ripe!

Rulos make the greatest fritos when they are green. For some reason, diabetics can eat them without upsetting their sugar...

I can't imagine eating one of the ripe and raw!! it must have been exceedingly starchy??

I have eaten raw plantains, by mistake, on a hike in Puerto Rico...WTH, I was hungry!

I can't tell a whole lot of difference between them and platano.

I recommend them boiled with Gouda cheese, que rico!

Guineos manzanos ,delicious! I sometimes get them here in the US; very expensive. I do prefer rulos to plantains, but I don't eat them raw. Those of you that eat them raw, don't eat too many of them.

While we are on the topic of rare or different bananas/platanos, when I was there in June, I had some plantain from a tree that are supposedly from Venezuela. They are shorter and much fatter than normal plantain and round on each end. Almost about the size of an eggplant (the fat ones). They are much more sauve in taste and texture than normal plantain. Has anyone had these because any Dominicans I showed them too had never seen them before?

HB, I showed my husband the photo, he'd never seen them before, but he got on the phone with his vivero guy [God forbid we don't have one of every fruit available in DR on our property]. He told him they're not super popular because they grow very short bunches - maybe 12 as opposed to up to triple that amount for a typical platano bunch. He doesn't sell them, but a friend of his has a finca with several of them so he's going to get a few small trees from him and deliver them to our caretaker. Looking forward to tasting them

I saw them for the first time last July, at a supermarket in Santo Domingo. I thought they were super rulos, but someone told me that they were platanos.
The ones I saw were even bigger than the one on the foto.
I have not tried them.

They do differ one from another in their appearance and flavor.

i love rulos - especially yellow ones i'm not big on the starchy boiled banana family, but i'll even eat a raw plantain with some cheese. YUM! i ate an especially delicious banana a few weeks ago with a fellow DR1er.
