Why anyone would use Banco Popular is a mystery to me.

While I agree that I would not personally use them for anything, in particular as a foreigner, we know quite a few business customers of theirs in POP, they've been with them for years and years. Also, my wife has her slightly dormant account with them. It used to be in heavy use when she was running her business, but as we recently arrived here, it has not been in very active use recently...

Name a DR bank and there will be some that will tell you how bad it is. :) I've had my accounts with Banco Popular for over 15 years, and any (rare) problem has always been resolved simply enough. I find their fees to be about the same as other banks. The fee mentioned in post #95 hasn't yet been confirmed; if it is indeed true, it is rather high but a non-issue for me.

BTW, my minimal interactions combined with stories I've heard from friends would put BanReserva at the top of my bad list!

It's true that all banks have their faults, but I have had accounts with Popular for fifteen years and a year ago opened one with BHD. So far, the service at BHD has been very noticeably better. The only thing I prefer about Popular is that you get a ticket and usually a seat while you are waiting for service.

I wouldn't use Banreservas because any time I have had to go there the lines for service have been ridiculous - at least that is the case in Cabarete.

I do like that I can make an appointment online with Popular for either the counter or the service desk...I just show up at that time, put my info in the kiosk thingy, and wait about 5 minutes at the most. Appointment slots are limited, but making the appointment two days ahead of time has been sufficient thus far. Not all branches offer this...only the two big ones in POP have it, for example

Below is a list of all banks in the DR. Anyone care to rank them. Some are smaller so I don't know anything about them.

They are pretty good, but the problem is getting to the window to do anything. Tons of people all the time......................

Always avoid having to deal with tellers/ lines on or near the 1st and the 15th of the month because the state employees are paid around this time.
