Things seem to be getting better and better for the Dominican tourist industry. Barceló Group and their partners Avoris Corporation Empresarial have just announced the start of operations of their new airline, Iberojet. Iberojet will have a hub in the Dominican Republic.

The plan is for Iberojet to begin operations in May of this year. The airline will fly to destinations in Latin America, the United States and Canada. Iberojet also operates in Europe.

But that is not all. World2fly, created by Iberostar, another leading Spanish hotel company with a large operation in the Dominican Republic, will be flying to Punta Cana as of this June 2021.

We will see if finally this one, Iberojet, with hub in the DR (I suppose PUJ) will finally fly.
Fly Cana, Sky Cana ... both came with great fanfares to announce their launch but neither does fly yet ...

SkyCana DBA is already flying with Some Charters from SDQ to MDE, has schedule flights from POP to Medellin for the summer, also some new ones from SDQ asociated to a travel agency, and they are also suppose to do flights in combination with Cuban Airline calle Yes to Join families of cubans from Miami and Havana in Punta Cana.

About Iberojet I would like to know how they plan to fly that fast, its impossible to create an airline here in 8 months, they only have limited options to do that, is to buy an airline already created here, are invest money in one of them like FlyCana that is 121 - airline that can operate airplanes over 35 seats and they was looking for inversors, Another option is that they got authorization with 5 and 7 Freedom that will let them to operate as a Dominican Airlines but this one is more dificult to get it, so I would bid for they invested in a Dominican Airline. AVA Airways purchased a 135 AOC airlines, wich only let operatate airplanes under 35 seats, they were authorized to change the name already in AVA Airways.

Dominican Republic does not limit foreign ownership of airlines. Remember Iberojet is a EU airline and there are open skies between EU and US so even if US go by foreign ownership restrictions it's still EU owned. I would not worry that much about it. JAC just assigned an AOC to yet another new Dominican airline.

Iberojet will be the name of the new airline.

What has happened is two small charter carriers (Orbest and Evelop) owned by Barcelo are merging with Iberojet, a Spanish travel company hopefully creating synergies for all the companies involved.

Both Orbest and Evelop had/has flights to PUJ. Both however are bleeding red ink and likely cannot survive as they currently exist.........thus the merger.

Iberojet will not become a Dominican Airline............but they will have a hub here..........likely PUJ........where they already had/have a small presence. Given their small fleet size, they are a rather small fish in the big pond.

To do that without being Dominican Airline is impossible, local airlines wont let that happend. Intercaribbean was operating flights with the rights as Dominican Airlines and allthose flights were cancelled because of that. Dominican Aviaion law says what can and cant do international airline.

Then I guess we may well witness the impossible in the 3rd/4th quarter of this year.

I think Barcelo and Iberostar wield enough political influence in the DR to get it done. That of course first depends on the bailout of the airlines by the Spanish government.........rumor has it the merger had to be in place to seek/receive government help.

Time will tell though.

I dont think this case influences will work, can telll you when IDAC cancelled the routes to Intercaribbean that is an airline from Turks and Caicos because they was operating the routes as Dominican airline with origen point in SDQ, the authorization for the flights was for something diferent, the ambassador of UK visitted the IDAC Office but after that in the interpelation for the decition from them was reconfirm as cancelled all those routes and now they are only able to fly from PLS and EIS, routes to AUA, KIN, SCU and HAV all are cancelled.

Something like that is what Iberojet is planning to do and thats why I can tell without creatting a Dominican Airline will be Impossible to do it.
