Looking to stay here for a week, starting the end of Jan. Encountered very mixed reviews online. Anyone have experience with this property? $70US/ night. Some reviewers said that water was shut off at different times during the day.

I don't really like the residential, it's an older complex in Pueblo Bavaro. If u PM me i can give u some newer better appartments close to this one, that are more comfortable and newer. The one u mentioned is def one of the older appartments and not very comfortable.

Why are you coming to the DR? If it's a vacation, Pueblo Bavaro is not where you want to be. It's nowhere near the beaches or anything else for that matter.

For $70 per night you can do a lot better. The previous poster is right. Bad area to be in for anything.

Someone is gaming Trip Advisor or Expedia; my friend almost stayed there last month, not knowing the areas to focus on. That location keeps coming up in searches and, as pointed out, is nowhere near the beach.

Just coming for a quick getaway, suck down a few Presidentes, and eye the chicas. Apart from being away from the beaches, what about that area is bad?

70 per NIGHT in pueblo bavaro? forget that ripp off.
anyways, Pueblo Bavaro is since a longer while in trouble with their water, you will not have a flushing toilet for many hours daily there. there are much better places.
and as mentioned above, Pueblo Bavaro is far from everything, you could also choose to stay right at the airport hotel instead.

Thanks. Based on some input from previous posts, I think I've settled on the MT hotel. Appears to be in the center of things, and, maybe a short cab ride for things that aren't within walking distance. I could use a bit of walking anyway.

Going to take an unlocked doo-doo phone with me for use there. Can I assume that it would be cheaper to purchase minutes and a sim card from a local provider in DR vs purchase prepaid with a company like Digicel?

dont know dicicel or alikes, but it is cheap to get a local SIM and reload it with needed minutes.
keep in mind that the higher the amount of minutes you load on a SIM at a time, the longer away is the expiration date for those minutes.

Orange and Claro both have stores within walking distance.

If anyone is aware of a reliable, honest taxi driver in the Bavaro area, I solicit your input. Don't plan to rent a vehicle after hearing the horror stories posted on this forum. I can only conclude that I was lucky with the previous time I rented. Not willing to tempt fate at this point.

Rent the car. Most roads in the area are new. I have been here over 7 years and have never had a problem. Can't say that I have ever met an honest cab driver here. Book a car throught any of the major brands and bring a copy of your booking. Don't pay the exorbitant insurance fees as if you have a gold or better visa you are covered.
Enjoy your stay. Steves is still the best chica bar. It got better when a Canadian named Brian bought it.
