I rarely go to a 'strange' gas station.... always my regular guys.

and I still stand beside them shooting sh!t while they pump it.....
They wouldn't cheat me if i went to take a leak during the fill.

Careful, cautious..... everywhere - is my credo

I like that they pump for you.
No dirty hands, no queuing up to pay, no toxic fumes......

When they first started the self service in Illinois my then wife got a free T-Shirt in my size that said "I pump my own." She was confused why I didn't wear it!

Last week I stepped into Caribe Express office to change just $40.00. 45.4 for the exchange rate. The girl gave me 1616 pesos and I said it should be 1816. She started to argue with me and a Dominican man behind me said to her that she had shorted me by 200 pesos and she coughed it up without further ado!

Hmm strange... Everywhere I saw Caribe Express they give you a receipt along with the money which shows the correct amount
e.g.

40
*
45.40
=
1816.00

a small paper receipt out of the calculator. Never had a problem when changing at Caribe Express or well-known cambista. ALL of them give out calculation/receipt.

They do give you a receipt all time, but the person paying needs to know how to count. Not everyone qualifies for this here.

Beware also when paying with card at the Shell station on the Boulevard Tur?stico:
Mr C just noticed his card was charged RD$2,000 twice for the same purchase and went to report it to the bank.

Yesterday I filled gas at “Sunix” Bavaro for RD$ 2000. When they finished and gave me the invoice I started the engine but the gasmeter showed that less than RD$ 2000 quantity of gas has been filled. But the number 2000 was blinking on the gas machine and I had invoice for RD$ 2000. I got out of the vehicle and asked the guy to reset the gas machine and show me again how much gas he had filled. He was confused, started explain me that somebody told him that I want gas for RD$ 1500 and start putting in my hands a banknote of RD$500. I was angry with his stupidity because the figure 2000 was still blinking and I had invoice for RD$ 2000. Tried to find the manager but he was not at the station. I got the name of the guy who tried to rob me and got away.
Now I am wondering where to address my complain. I am suspicious that the manager of the Sunix station is a “combina” with the workers. So I will look for some kind of Government organization for consumers’ protection. If somebody knows coordinates of such organization – please let me know.
P.S. Every time you are suspicious about gas robbery – ask for a check of gas machine memory. They cannot manipulate it.

Here's what I do, step by step, when I go to fill up. Pull up to the pump, wait for the guy to walk up to my car, pop open the fuel filler door, tell the guy very clearly how much I want of what type of fuel (ex. Dame 500 de la regular), normally they repeat it to me and I make sure he's got the right amount, watch the screen as he pulls the nozzle out (of the correct fuel choice) and make sure it's reset to zero, then keep an eye on the screen while the car is being filled up and make sure it reaches the requested amount then pay cash (preferably with the exact amount). Being attentive to the whole process is key. If you're distracted talking on the phone or chatting with a passenger, chances are they'll take advantage of that. If you ask them to fill it up (lleno), then have them round it up to the nearest 50 or 100 or they probably won't have the exact change (supposedly). Just put all the odds in you favor during that 3 minute transaction and remember that in their eyes, as a gringo you have a limitless bank account so who cares if you lose a few pesos?

Be afraid, be very afraid. Do not drink the water, don't eat the food, don't buy the gas, and for sure don't breathe the air! Every day is a Red alert day here!
