Based on the advice I've received in other posts, my wife and I have decided to spend a week or so in an all-inclusive hotel in Juan Dolio (probably in mid-October). We are not on a budget and would be happy to pay more for a hotel that is of decent quality and clean, and most importantly has excellent security and is safe from robberies/violent crime. We don't plan on leaving the hotel premises except for to and from the airport. We'd appreciate any recommendations for specific hotels in Juan Dolio. Thanks!

Is there a reason your picking Juan Dolio? If not on a budget and you will not be leaving the resort why not Punta Cana. That time of the year rates can be very reasonable for Punta Cana. Personally I am not a big fan of the resorts of Juan Dolio. The only 2 I can think of right now is the Barcel? Capella Beach and the Coral Costa Caribe but it has been quite awhile since I have gone to Juan Dolio.

As long as you stay in the hotel you should be safe- JD is dead if you go outside and is like the wild west Stealing, killings etc

Maybe look at Bayahibe. Not sure if that is too far from Santo Domingo for you.

Need to be within reasonable distance to Santo Domingo.[/QUOTE

No decent AI in Juan Dolio! The Capella sucks in my opinion and have been let down countless times, the checkin and type of clientele alone drives me nuts.
The closest decent AI to Santo Domingo (In my opinion) is the Bahia Principe La Romana. Its actually just outside of San Pedro de Marcoris not in La Romana so we are talking about another 15km further from the Capella yet worth it.Bahia Principe

Thanks for the heads-up. I've decided to venture a bit further away from Santo Domingo and stay at the Bahia Principe La Romana after reading your post and the numerous bad reviews of the all-inclusive beach hotels in Juan Dolio and Boca Chica.

I'm seeing offers for $200/night, which seems reasonable if the place is nice and also safe. Was there anything you didn't like about this hotel?

Smarter move and only 15 mins further!

I have stayed in Juan Dolio many times. The Barcello Capella is trash. The Coral Costa Caribe is a little bit better (not much). Many locals flood the resorts on weekends and they are unpleasant for this reason. I remember us sitting on the floor at the buffet due to no seating available. The Coral Caribe has a casino and disco which we always left at 4-5 in the morning. The food at these resorts suck. We would have lunch and dinner at playa Guayacanas. Nice italian food places there.

Do you agree that the Bahia Principe La Romana would be a better option?

Never been there. So I cannot say. I really try to stay away from the big resorts. For example I am going to Nagua this week for 4th of July holiday and getting a beachside hotel there best room they got for $1800 a night. Have stayed there before and the owner is really good guy.

Sounds like a nice time. I am only willing to spend around $200/night though.

I am presently in Juan Dolio at the Fior dei Loto, which has kitchenette rooms at the W. end of thown for $30 US. I have been here for around 10 days this trip and saw no threats of danger at all. But I am not the AI type.
