I am looking for the best beach in the DR.

I am 37, and will be spending a couple of days at the Coral Hamaca in Boca Chica mid November. However I am considering a side trip(s) to either P/Plata or P/Cana.

I love rating beaches, please let me know your favorates.

PS-The best beach I have ever seen is Negril, Jamiaca some worthy notables are: Trunk Bay - ST John Meagens Bay - St Thomas Shoal Bay - Anguilla North Beach - Isla Mureles - Mexico Palm Beach - Aruba Cininnimon Bay - St John

Get back to me. Thnx

Everybody has a defferent opinion on what makes a great beach. I've been to Negril about a dozen times so I know that beach well. Flat and clean, with calm clear shallow waters and nothing but pure debris-free sand underfoot as one enters the water, which slopes very gently. An easy beach for walking on but not a lot of palms trees except those planted by the resorts. Further down the beach are rock cliffs that look down into deep blue pools of water.

Boca Chica is my favorite beach and is much like the beach in Negril only wider and not as long and more businesses in the back drop. But is has that same gradual drop off with debree free sand underfoot and very calm clear waters, continuously cleaned by freshwater underground streams. A light tan colored sand with a smattering of palm trees and other types of trees, two nearby islands in the distance, and a reef that just breaks the water's surface and runs in a big half circle of about a 1/4 mile radius that runs from shore to shore, with a very deep blue choppy sea beyond it. The contrast between the rough deep blue on one side of the reef with the bright blues and greens of the clear shallow waters on the inside and the intense green of the lush islands' growth make for some spectacular views at times.

Some people like the deep golden beaches of the north coast, with its deep blue crashing surf and lots of rock outcrops and cliffs, sometimes mountains in the backdrop. There is something about the contrast between the golden sand, the white froth of the breaking waves, and the deep blue color of the water.

I've heard about the beaches of Las Galeras, unspoiled with a mountain backdrop. Some say they are the best on the island and voted best in the Caribbean by ??? Magazine.

The most beautiful I've seen are the beaches of Punta Cana, with silky soft powder white sand heavily studded by thousands of coconut palms against clear blue waters with a 20 mile shoreline and nothing built above the tree line, and voted prior as best beach in the Caribbean by ??? Magazine.

Beaches are like people. Everybody has their own opinion about which is one best looking and your opinion often changes after you get to know them. See the beach of Punta Cana below and again at http://www.debbiesdominicantravel.com/jimbeach2a.jpg.

Off the top of my head, some of my favorite beaches in the DR are the following, many in non-developed areas. I like Boca Chica beach, but the eastern end of the beach, where there are only homes (near the rotonda). Sosua beach in the north, is also lovely, but I like it only on week days when it is not crowded.

In the list below I have put an asterix on the ones that are on beach strips from where you can walk to a hotel:

East Coast:

*Dominicus (strip in front of the new Dominicus Palace)

*Punta Cana (different sections)

Catalina Island beaches

Saona Island beaches

North Coast:

*Playa Grande (Mar?a Trinidad Sanchez province, east of Puerto Plata on the north coast) -- big waves but spectacular scenery and great for walking)

*Punta Rucia (some sections)

Northeast Coast:

Coz?n (off Las Terrenas) in Samana

Playa Rinc?n (off Las Galeras) in Samana

Cayo Levantado island in Saman?

Southwest:

El Derrumbao (off Las Calderas)

Bah?a de las Aguilas (Pedernales)

Northwest:

El Morro (Monte Cristi)

Re: Best Beaches in DR. Island info?

I was really disappointed this year when we went to Saona. I have the DR playas as a screensaver and my wallpaper is the Saona one. I was really looking forward to actually being there but Hurricane Georges had got there before me! Saona now looks nothing like the screensaver. Was Catalina as badly damaged?

Re: Best Beaches in DR. Island info?

Saona island lost several coconut trees and many of its picturesque houses in the town were destroyed. But I understand they were rebuilt. We were in Saona Beach this July (at the Gran Dominicus Beach area) and it was as lovely as can be. I continue to recommend a visit to Saona if you will be staying in the La Romana area. It definitely is one of our better beaches.

I agree with Jim : Best Beaches in relation to what. What do you want to do on the beach? Walk, swim ( fast drop-ff , walk to your waist 150 yards?) , lay, view etc.etc. To each his/her own. Only where to some places I have been. Ratings - Puerto Plata, Barbados,Varadero, Acapulco, Manzanillo,Jaco Beach. That is for my (and my wife's) liking and not necessarily for others. It is a personal thing. Bill
