My husband and I were looking for the Dominican brand AVO in other than the duty free shops. The only place that had them was in the duty free. Why was that? The pricing for 4 AVO cigars was US $34.00 in the duty free. Still have not found them on the North Coast in any of the shops.

And you will not find them there. You can find them in the cigar store in the Gran Almirante. But they are not cheap...

Check out Tamboril

Tamboril is a small town about 20 minutes north of Santiago. I believe it is technically part of Santiago. There you can find several small factories with excellent dom cigars. I usually get robustos but you can find anything and quite reasonable ($1 apiece). Just drive down the main drag and ask anyone where are the cigar factories. I always go with Dominican friends who enter first, negotiate prices, and then I enter to try the product and purchase.

Got my cigars!

Hi, OP here. One of the kindest gentlemen on this group went to a factory in Santiago and had 2 bundles of great cigars sent here to Santo Domingo for us, and for that we are very grateful. Enjoyed talking to him too, maybe we'll take a trip to Santiago and pick them up next time so we can share a cafe or Presidente. Gracias my friend....

I used to purchase good cigars (including cubans) in a small shop on Lope De Vega situated a on the left side of the street as you drive down from Lincoln towards Kennedy. Sorry but I do not remember the name.

I am looking for a place in Santiago I can get Ashton's or Arturo Fuentes(Hemingway Classic) I have a friend back home that requested me to find them. As for other brands or types I would not have a clue as to what is good or not. I'm not a cigar smoker. I know they want way too much in the duty free stores. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Tom.

If anybody can help you with this it will probably "Hillbilly". I think in the Gran Almirante is a little cigar store where you can try.

Another possibility would be to go to Centro Leon and by some La Auroras or Leon Jimenes there. For the money you would pay for Ashtons or Fuentes here in Santiago you can probably get some of the best cigars Leon Jimenes produces.

CanWest: You won't find them in Santiago.

While they are made here, they are seldom sold here. You might try the cigar store at the Gran Almirante, as they do stock the best brands...

At the Centro Leon, you can find good cigars, but you also pay good prices.

While there are very good cigars, if you are looking for certain brands, you will pay higher than New York prices and certainly a lot more than JR Cigars.

Let me know if you want, maybe I can help...

Just me careful out there

What's the best /cheapest place to buy Dominican cigars? Is there someplace where they make them and sell them? In October I bought them at the Duty Free shop [dumb, I know, but I got a last-minute e-mail from a friend and there was no time to shop], and now a couple of guys want some us to bring back some boxes of good cigars. We'll be in DR Mar 16-27th, first week in SD, second on the north shore.

During a factory visit in 2006 (set up by Tampa Sweetheart Cigars as a long-time customer) I was advised at Arturo Fuente factory that ANY of Fuente's cigars would be significantly cheaper in Florida, due to Zona Franca regulations prohibiting sales within the DR. It was explained that Fuente would have to "import" and pay duty on the cigars they had exported duty-free, and that security in the Zone was pretty tightly controlled. As an aspiring emigre, that troubles me since my favorite smokes are Fuentes, and my addiction runs 4-6 a day! Looks like some trips to Tamboril will be in my future.

Most people try to see Tim Hall at Cafe Cito over near Playa Dorada onthe highway..he is fair.

Otherwise it is a trip to the Cibao...Navarrete, Santiago, Tamboril....

Does anyone know of a good cigar shop (pricing especially) in SD or Samana? Brand and rings are not important to me, but quality and price are. Last time i was in Samana, I bought a bunch from a little shack up on a hill there. They were ok, I still cant decide if I was hustled or now, lol. If its a small local cigar I dont mind, I'd prefer to help small businesses anyway.

Thanks,

You will also find a good cigar spot at Hotel Lina and at the Hotel Jaragua. Both offer fair pricing, and good product.
Supermercado Nacional offers products from Altadis and La Aurora.

If you are going to Saman?, take a tiny detour and go to Tamboril and ask where there is a cigar factory...(there are like fifteen of them close by the center of town...)

Cigars

One more turista that will be visiting the DR for the first time in Feb.

We are staying at a resort near La Romana, a little town callled Bayahibe i think. Anyway, i'm looking for a reputable place to buy cigars around there or along the way to Santo Domingo if possible. Any ideas?

Also, how hard is it to set up a tour of one of the larger manufacturer factories, Fuentes, General cigar, etc? If possible, how long would something like take? We are coming primarily for the scuba diving but i'd be interested in a tour at one of the majors if possible.

Your help would be greatly appreciated Hillbilly.

Take a trip over to Tabacalera Garcia in La Romana....I have heard that they do have tours. There is a store in town (actually on the way out of town towards Sto Dgo) is a place called Plaza Caribe, I think. They have excellent product.
Also, down in the Marina in Casa de Campo, there is a store called Fumo that has a good selection of authentic ISOM cigars, but you need to be careful because sometimes they have uninvited "guests"...but they are good and fairly priced...

The Fuente and General factories are five hours away...not for a vacation on the South Coast, but if you can tour Garcia you will have seen almost everything.
