what's the best way to phone home to the US?
read somewhere to use calling cards, but my experience with
hotels in the caribbean is that they don't allow you to call
the access number on the calling cards? thus you have to use
pay phones outside of the resort, if you can find one nearby.
Is bringing my GSM cellphone an option?
What would the per minute cost be using my room phone?

I've never made phone calls from a Resort before, but from a pay phone or calling center, it's really easy. Just buy one of the three major calling cards (TriCom, Codetel, or Verizon), and calls to the states are the same rate as calls to cell phones in the DR.

I'm trying to remember the rate I got this last summer... I think it was like 12 minutes for a 50 peso card or so. I don't know how much rates differ between the cards, but I think it's all the same.

DON'T use the hotel phone. Before I got my education I had a week of bills that totalled over$400. Use calling cards. Very cheap to call US. If you dont want to use the center(which is very convienent) buy a cheap phone that will cost you about $25
