It has to be notarized before translation, but when we did it, my hubby got it notarized in San Francisco de Macoris. We were also able to have it translated in San Francisco for a lot less than it would have cost here in Canada. It cost about $900RD and we had it back the next day. PM me is you need more info.

The name of a lawyer in Puerto Plata is Felix Mercado. His # is (809) 360-7018 and he is at #52 Ave Colon.

He is both a legal translator and a notary public and comes highly recommended by someone that has gone through the process.

Ok so I'm getting different stories on how to do the papers and I'm unable to get in touch with CIC...so here it is. He has his police papers, our marriage certificate and his birth cerfificate does anyone know what has to be done?? I thought we could just get them translated and he could send them to me but someone told him that his birth and our marriage certificate have to be legalized or notarized and he would have to send them to Santo Domingo cause noone in puerto Plata can do this

The marriage certificate should have been notarized when you got it; it's just a signature on the back of the certificate with a bunch numbers and a signature. The birth certificate needs the same thing. That can usually be done where the birth certificate was issued, if not they can tell you where to bring it to do that.
He can then send these to you to get them translated, but I would find someone to do it in the DR, it is less expensive. If nothing can be done in Puerto Plata, take a bus to San Francisco, it's a lot closer than SD.

Shawna,

When we applied, my husband picked up his birth certificate and then the family lawyer took it have it certified/notarized.

Then marriage certificate was already done for us when we received it from the hotel.

We then took the birth certificate, marriage certificate, police check etc and had them translated.

It did not cost alot to have the lawyer take care of it for us.
