Question. Leaving from SDQ, no luggage. If we check in online and have digital boarding passes, is that sufficient or do we need a paper one too?

You'll need a paper one unless thi8ngs have changed......
If you 're not checking Luggage , get there early as usual, and proceed to Security with your ID and Phone showing the boarding pass, Security will tell u if its ok, it should be . but who knows its the DR,. you wont lose much time trying , but if you wait in the check in line and find out you did not need to , then you will have wasted time and feel silly.
I am on a plane more than most. I embrace technology; however, I always get a paper boarding pass when possible. If some pinhead tries to sit in my favorite window seat in the front right of the plane, I flash my boarding pass.

Never the Legroom seats in the front , that I will not stand for .. and I even kicked out a guy with a Cane once , F him .. I paid extra for that specific Window Seat as u just stated ,, the Balls though ..
But in the back , holy smokes , its a Crap shoot , you walk back and some :" peeky no english" Dominican is sitting in my seat and wont move

I get an e-mail to check in early online, but...
I have never been able to check-in online since the flight is International.
Like Santiago DR, I have tried so many times to check in on line ,always in response to an email a day or so before but have never had luck . Then when I go to the first gate where they check your ticket against the passport and your face ,I often see people just showing the ticket details on their telephone and they do this at the last check also ..There must be a trick to it that I have not learned. Still , I like the feel of my paper ticket in my hand.
Yes . Depends on the airline ….origin …destination etc….but most airlines have apps that you can use to check in ….and it will generate your boarding pass….with a QR code ….that you can use in lieu of a paper boarding pass.
For example, Delta encourages online check in …especially using their app…works very well for travel within the USA…most US business travelers use the app …also works well for USA to European countries.
However…from DR to the US , UK or Brazil …as of earlier this month…..in our experience at PUJ …yes , you can check in online ….and the app will say that you are good to go ….but you will still get a printed boarding pass at the airport…regardless …most probably for all flights from DR….so we do both …because you get some useful information if you check in using the app…plus you can do things like upgrades …changes…notifications…etc on the app.
No harm in doing both …paper and phone....in our experience.

That could happen on an Easyjet flight, but never on a regular/traditional airline. Each passenger has an assigned seat. And different boarding groups, that the staff enforce unmercifully.
You will need a paper copy especially if you are flying Spirit everytime we arrive at STI at 1am my wife always asks a representative if we need to wait on the line and we are always told yes because we do not have a printed copy of boarding passes. Well guess what I bought the next day to send to our home in DR. 🖨️
I’m glad I asked. Coming down we didn’t need paper boarding pass, used my phone. Went straight from car to security/plane. I had a feeling it was different here.

Every flight I take, I make sure I'm one of the first persons on the plane.
Guess what? I've never boarded and found somebody in my assigned seat.
I try to do that as well, after the last incident I was steaming..... I would also ASK for the Emergency Seat ( Volunteer to Assist ) they not stealing that Seat , for sure .
just trying to warn others . it can and does happen ,.. Like you said, if you a little slow, a little late.
The bigger problem though is not enough Room in the Overhead bins in the back.
