Then why do you settle for such extremely cheap accommodations when you travel to the DR??

Who said I settle for cheap accomodations, I stay at Candil or Costolunga, just making a point that even though Zapata is not as nice as the others, for boca chica, you only need a cabana type room.
But I will be staying at Colonial in Santiago, so I will be "puting my money where my mouth is"

it all depends

i think it all depends what the OP is looking for on his vacation.

My hands down favorite is El Candil. Affordable...but they DO got the extra mile to really make a difference. I used to work for a 4 star hotel...and while they are NOT a four star hotel....their service is top notch...especialy for what you pay for.

I think i said some of this before...but i will say it again. I like the fact that they had LARGE 5 or 10 gallon bottles of water available for your room (beats having to pay time and time again for small bottles).

Even tho i didnt really use the kitchenette...i liked having clean plates and utenciles available if i wanted to serve some snacks to my friends.

Also..i like the courtyard area around the pool...kinda social..but not full of putas (just request a room on the second or third floor if you are sensitive to early morning noise).

The clientele is very diverse...from families to chica chasers to a few gay guys (even a religous group one year that we teased...I was hanging out with this couple on their honeymoon and they were having a poolside meeting...and we decided to go swimming...her topless :)...but everyone is discrete and cool.

If it your first time there Petteri (after picking you up from the airport for free) will drive you around town and point out good places to eat and what is left of the night life.

It might not be on the beach....but the walk up that hill helps burn off whatever you have drunk or eaten....but a moto is always there to escort you home.

AND you are just a couple of blocks from the casino at the hamaca (if you like that sorta thing)

Sure it aint 4 stars...but they certainly to all they can do to make it feel like it was.

well...thats just my 2 pesos worth. If you DO a search i went on a rant a while back comparing candil to costalunga.

Oh...and i DO like having cable...back if february i was able to watch CNN and keep up to date (plus i was able to watch the NYC snow storm as i was sweating thru 86 and sunny....made me feel GOOOD).
