My 14 year old son wears perfume when he goes to school.
I don't like it,and the smell bothers me. He likes it.
I ask him to only use a little but it is strong. Apparently because it is cheap perfume the smell goes away quickly.
I never wear perfume.
Do you think it is bad if I tell him not to wear it?
Is it a cultural thing here?
Maybe bob and others could provide their insight as an educators. Tks

Cologne or perfume? Well better than smelling of Body Odor. My wife discourages it because many people, including her, are allergic to perfume, but doesn't forbid it. Some kids still use a little.

Nothing wrong with wanting to smell good. He is not sitting in the house with the cheap cologne. He is going to school. Cultural thing to smell good? Not cultural, its being a teenager.

Perfume has a higher amount of essential oils than cologne.

Here's an idea, buy him one you like, show him how to use it. When you're given lemons, make lemonade.

My son did the same thing around that age. Cologne was a bit too strong, so he used body sprays (Axe, etc..). Around this age they start to pay more attention to their appearance, smelling good, etc... It only gets more expensive from here...lol

Agreed
Better to spend an extra $30 or $40 bucks and get the real thing.

You said in the OP that you don't like it that your 14 years old son is wearing one and that the smell bothers you. Well, if he is wearing an actual perfume, perhaps you should offer him a similar smeling cologne. It will be a lighter smell, hence not bothering you as much. That's a better option than asking him to use a little, of which the smell is still strong enough for you to dislike.

Perfume or cologne?
It’s the kind of ingredients used that make the scent “cheap” and mostly unpleasant, synthetic fragrances.
Synthetic fragrances is the name used for any type of perfume that is made in a laboratory with ingredients such as petroleum and other gas byproducts.
They are used to make cosmetics smell more pleasant, but are very different from the natural fragrances that have been used for centuries.
That is most commonly used in the DR, as the real deal, I mean the classic French brands as Chanel, Hermès (Terre my personal favorite for years), Guerlain, YSL, are not cheap.
