This should not come as a surprise. The Webmaster got into a furious fight with TOM and ended up on the losing end. Bravenet was mostly a forum about non-Dominican issues and I kept counting only 23 regulars covering 99% of the postings. I understand that IP numbers could have been compromised thru a hacker and port scannings were reported by some posters.

And we all REALLY know who is responsible and why. I don't blame the webmaster for not wanting to take any more crap from certain people.

Doesn't surprise me...

Sometimes as a webmaster you can only play the politician for so long.

I personally don't know of one open or non-moderated forum that has survived.
Being a moderator can be a thankless task at times and you will always aggravate certain people with your actions.

Bottom line...

At the end of the day, if you want to protect and develop what you have built and worked for,
you have to take what you deem to be appropriate action regardless of the consequences.

It could have been that the Webmaster pulled the plug on the board because he was tired of the fighting. He started that site to provide an open forum for free speech. He was not making any money out of it, actually it probably was costing him money, and it turned out to be a pain in the neck. When he gets threatened with a law suit why bother to continue? I think the whole thing got out of hand. Free speech was the goal. To give an analogy: If I invite a guest to my home I welcome him/her to speak freely and enjoy my hospitality. If I catch them going through my checkbook to see what I have in it, just because I left it out on my office desk, I would feel that was an invasion of my privacy and abuse of my hospitality. I believe port scans and running my ip numbers to gather info. on me because you don't like what I wrote is akin to going through my checkbook. You might be able to do it, but should you? I think it would be poor manners. If I don't like what you write, I will respond by writing my retort - not by threatening you with lawsuits, etc. Free speech allows us to disagree. I may not like some of what you say, but I defend your right to say it. Alas, another forum gone because some adults are having problems acting like adults. That's my dos centavos on the issue.

More likely that Bravenet hosting deleted it. There were sites listed that ostensibly provided hacks into their system. Also, I think those boards are free, so the Bravenet hosters wouldnt be under any obligation to anyone to have to put up with that. Rather than look into it or get to the root of the matter they could just delete it.

Re: Doesn't surprise me...

Now I'll switch hats and reply as the webmaster of Samana.Net's Forum: Rob, I completely agree with you and I know there are people who have not been happy that you and I will use the delete button when we feel it's appropiate for objectionable material on our respective forums.

It's too bad this alternative forum could not continue where we could bitch, piss, moan and throw darts to our heart's content.

Re: Bravenet- Attack Rob site

It seems that Bravenet was an "attack Rob site". Like a meeting place for all the people who were censored on DR1. I found it childish in that respect. It does not surprise me that they were axed. To survive on the Internet you need have commercial sponsers or at least some kind of advertising. Some people don't like rules and do not know how to do business. I guess they will have to go back to playing with their toys.

Free Speech Site

Mike

You seem to be very familiar with a website you don't like :) Closet liberal are you!

Bravenet was not an "attack Rob site," though it could be if we wanted to do so. If we felt Rob was stifiling free speech, we could say so without fear of censorship.

Here on DR1 we have to live by the rules determined by the administrator, sometimes good for decorum, always bad for free thinking people.

You post from the DR so I assume you either left the US for one reason or another or never enjoyed the wonderful concept of free speech, truly free, not what one person feels is appropriate

Saying that, I hope I am not deleted :)

And I do mourn the loss of Bravenet, I still don't know the true reason

As I have said many times...

the beautiful thing about the Internet is that you have so many choices. If anyone is not happy with the way we run this board you can very easily go to www.google.com and type in the keywords
"Dominican Republic" and you will get presented with approx 1,150,000 other DR related sites/pages.

Dam! We come up No:1, I wonder how that happened?

Re: Free Speech Site

I have not spent any real time on Bravenet but after visiting this AM before it was shut down, I understand possibly why. It seemed to me that the webmaster himself and to some extent somebody called Rock Child both were breaking Bravenet's rules. It was surrealistic reading the Webmaster's comments. I seen Rob get ticked but this guy lost control completely. not only of the board but himself.

Again we are guests on DR1 and while we get away with some stuff, DR1 gets to set the rules and enforce them as they see fit. When you live in someone else's house there is no "free" speech.

It seems when thier have been problems ....either on this site or the "other site" it seems to have the same individual involved.

piss, moan and throw darts

I vaguely remember the incident on DR1 that spawned the genesis of the Bravenet site. At the same time, the forum "dominicantopics" was started at egroups.com, now yahoogroups.com It had basically the same purpose as the bravenet forum, to start or continue discussion threads that are not appropriate for DR1 or in Andy's words, "where we could bitch, piss, moan and throw darts to our heart's content." The link is below. It is mail based vs. board based and has archives, etc.

'The Advisory' will truly be missed

I for one will miss the 'open arena atmosphere' (for the lack of a better team) that we had in our little forum. Being able to speak one's mind freely, and on any topic was probably the best part of the deal. This open ended theme allowed for or was a contributing factor to a few 'bear fist brawls and some 'no holds barred' exchanges over at the 'soap box darby' (as in clime up on your soap box and say your piece) that might best characterize what was happening at times when things got down and personal at the ol' Bravenet.

If I were a conspiracy 'theory type' I would say that the poster "Rock Child" was a "malcontent" (other, more descriptive words and phrases have been deleted :) that came to the Bravenet with larceny in his heart and the intention of stirring up trouble, which he truly DID. . .

regards,

. . . CES

CES

I read that board just before it was deleted yesterday. I don't know what happened but I think the battle between Tom and the webmaster ended it. I think the webmaster may have been drunk or completely lost his mind from the swearing and offensive posts, it was like nothing I have ever seen between two fighting posters let alone a webmaster

Re: 'The Advisory' will truly be missed

Puke Face,

The webmaster doesn't drink and I know for a fact that he was just finally fed up for providing a free service where he was attacked once to many times and accused of being part of some computer probing of Forum posters and installation of trojans (his and mine included) that has been going on; apparently initiated by one or more disgruntled posters.

There's a lot more to this situation than you realize so be aware of the facts BEFORE you make your assumptions. His choice of language may not have been the wisest, but I can't say that I really blame him for exploding.

Regardless of placement of blame, this free-spirited board will be missed.

Enough guys....

The thread ends here. It's getting into a mess of words and name calling, enough!

I'll be so glad when I can click an icon and close a thread :)
