I remember Tu Candela in Cartagena always had the policy of not letting certain low-life putas in, that was way before the scandal. They just try to keep the place classy, I think there is nothing against enforcing certain level of standard for your business.

But these regulations here are not from business owners, they are forced on them from authorities, hence they have no option but to follow or else !

I have just returned from a night out in Cabarete, where it seems that the powers that be have imposed some draconian new rules as of tonight. I stand to be corrected and proved wrong, but this is what I have been told by people who work in bars here.

1. No un-accompanied girls in bars.
2. The "Billiard" bars on the main street have to close at midnight. Actually I don't mind this one as the early hours karaoke was horrible - but it will clearly drive these bars out of business, which is a shame because they are very popular with many gringos like me. I can say that these bars were indeed closed at midnight tonight.
3. Girls must wear long trousers - no shorts or short skirts/dresses. Clearly this will be discrimination as it will only apply to Dominicans/Haitians and tourist girls will not be subjected to this Taliban-like interference in their personal lives.

Next week, my guess is burkas to be worn by all non-tourists.

The locals are already complaining about the "gringo" in Puerto Plata who is about to ruin their livelihoods. as it seems the Ministry of Tourism guy who is making these edicts is not Dominican, but Italian, so I am told.

Tonight, there were plenty of attractive Dominican/Haitian girls walking about on the beach, so it seems that for all the family tourists who may be offended after midnight not much has changed - yet.

They want to change Dominican fashion? ;)

Hum, i was told that the 12am closing time is just for the other side of the street (not the beach side)...the reason: because that's where people live--houses, apartments, condos, driftwood shacks, cardboard houses, etc. They need to sleep, and the people have been complaining for a long time to the police about the thumping bass and noise. The beach side restaurants and bars are not affected by this new ordinance.

As far as the dress code is concerned, i'm sitting on the beach right now watching girls walk past. I'm a girl watcher...I have a degree in Girl Watching (GW). I like to watch the girls walk up and down the beach in high heels and flip-flops. But the high heels pierce the main water and sewage lines below the sand and shower everyone in a glow in the dark green fluorescent deluge. I serve it to our customers as Free Shots.

Anyway, no dress changes have been made here on the beach. I got two working girls sitting at the bar right now resting their big boobs on the bar like a sack of potatoes. I suppose it takes the strain off their backs and attracts wandering eyes. They like to sit at the bar and gossip. They're gossiping right now. I wish the Moral Police would come by and make them shut their mouths for just 10 minutes while i listen to Badfinger play on the radio.

Yes, that's right - the midnight closing time only applies to the billiard bars on the other side of the street from the beach. And as I said, the late night noise from those bars disturbs me where I live - especially tuneless karaoke. But why not just ban loud music after midnight rather than forcing them to close? I guess from what you say the dress code only applies there too, although why short skirts should be a greater problem there escapes me.

LOL! You are too crazy Frank! But don't hold your breath waiting to listen to Badfinger. Have you seen what happens when the 'moral' police try to shut up a chica?! The 'lady' who throws sh-t balls at you from your restroom comes immediately to mind.

Because Dominicans have two volume settings on their stereo systems-loud, and off.

The problem if you are inside some of the bars is the music loud and the speakers are horrible. I went into a furniture store and their off brand PA speaker hurt my ears at a low level.

You want to talk descrimination... there is actually a law here that said that a 'woman' (this does not apply to men) may not marry for at least 9 months after a divroce???? I mean come on... that one to me was pretty ridiculous.

What I object to is the infringement of personal liberties, the discrimination against local people and the closure of bars that I choose to frequent. I think that many visitors will find this objectionable too.
