Cable over dsl in DR?

I've been planning on changing ISP for the last few months due to Verizon's terrible tech support and lack of stability. It seems I only have 3 other choices when it comes to high speed internet in Santo Domingo.

1 - Tricom (Turbo)
Heard a few good things about it but its the most expensive of the bunch and I\m not sure I want dsl again.

2 - Telecable Nacional
They have the cheapest fees but I can seems to find anyone that has used it or knows anyone that has. Anyone here try it out?

3- Aster
Prices are alright but speed only goes up to 512 kb/s which isnt enough for me.

Im sort of leaning towards telecable nacional but i'd like a little feedback first, anyone give me a hand?

What part of the city are you in?

We have had DSL since 97 and had relatively few problems.

The speed is always pretty good and consistent.

I live in Santo DOmingo in the Piantini sector. My problem with Verizon turned up about 3 months ago when this really loud noise popped up whenever I was talking on the phone and surfing the net at the same time.

I call up Verizon tell them the problem and they send over this guy who picks up the phone, tugs at a wire asks for something to drink, says nothing is wrong and leaves.

I call back 2 days later. DIfferent guy shows up and tells us to buy DSL filters. We do. Still have the same problem.

I call again. Guy comes over says he doesnt knwo what it might be, that filter should have fixed it and then leaves.

So in short I've had enough of Verizon.

Any thoughts on what the Cable internet providers are like?

Ive been using Verizons "Flash" DSL service for the past 4.5 years without any hiccups whatsoever. Their only problem is that they want too much $$$ for too little bandwidth.

I recently got Tricom/Telecable's (Tornado) service as a backup and havent been so lucky. Their stability isnt that great but its usable. They also have a problem with certain sites being extremely slow at times. Their speeds and prices are great though.

If they were as solid as Verizons service, I wouldve dropped them (Verizon) completely by now.

I would still recommend getting the Telecable (Tornado) service since it is cheaper, faster, and mostly usable.. lol

you can always learn how to "uncap" your modem for break-neck transfer rates. Note that uncapping your modem is a breach of contract since you will surpass the transfer rates "guaranteed" by your ISP and you will be dumped from their internet service once they catch on. This is playing russian roulette with your ISP. This crash and burn method is only for if you're fed up and about to switch to a new ISP anyways. Not advocating this practice, but just showing you where the cliffs edge is at.

Is cable internet service available only in Santo Domingo? This is the first I've heard of it in the DR. Does anyone know if it is available currently, or will be soon in Puerto Plata?
